how important is red/blue light for the grow?

yea i was just wondering how important it is to have red and blue light for the whole grow? like how beneficial is it to have red and blue for veg and flowering? i know alot of people just use mh for veg and hps for flower but what is the comparison to having both for each grow? thanks for any help...
