How I keep Cuttings Alive

Discussion in 'Sick Plants and Problems' started by KSGrower, Oct 19, 2006.

  1. Someone the otherday was talking about how to keep clones, and someone suggested in a fridge, all sounded a bit to complicated, but I have stumbled accross a way of keeping them alive without them growing, so far my cuttings have been alive for over 4 weeks, with no growth, the leaves are still green and everything seems fine, I cant say for certain that when i start to root them that they will take but I will let you know in another 3 weeks or so when i need them,

All I did was to take my cuttings as usual but I didnt use any rooting hormone, then I filled a tall beaker with water and covered the top with cling film, then I made a little hole in the clingfilm/cellophane and put the stem in the water all the way down so the cellophane hold the plant up and the plant has water, I've left this cutting under 2x18 or 15watts (whatever wattage it is for the short tubes) flourescent lights 24hours and as I say it is still healthy, the leaves haven't dried at all, and no roots have developed.

Like I said I dont know what is going to happen when I do use rooting hormone, maybe it wont survive, but if like me you dont have anything you can do with a cutting for a while and you are going to end up losing a good strain then it's worth ago, I just couldn't bare to lose this beautiful SilverPearl, but I had no way to really grow it untill my crop finish flowering, so fingers crossed it comes out.

If anyone is intrested on how it works out let me know and I will post an update.:smoking:

  2. your method works, but , in a wet papertowel in a ziplock & dude........ you can freeze cuttings and root them up to a week or 2 later

edit: ha! I was medicating when I was typing it's supposed to read you can "refridgerate" cuttings and root them up to a week or 2 later

  3. well, you can't "freeze" cuttings, they will die! you can keep cuttings in the fridge for weeks at a time. it's called putting them in "stasis." it's kind of like suspended animation. put the cuts in a ziplock bag with enough water (ph'd) in the bottom so the cut ends stay submerged. blow air into the bag and put them in the crisper drawer. every few day change out the air. i've kept clones this way for a month with no problems.
