How healthy is vaporizing marijuana?

Discussion in 'Vaporizers' started by blurryface, Oct 1, 2012.

  1. I have asthma and a long term chest infection (mycobacterium avium, if you're interested), so you could see why I would be concerned about my lung health. But I love weed. I own a vaporizer so I can off set the harmful effects, but how healthy is it? I understand it's way healthier than smoking it, but how healthy is it in comparison to not smoking at all? What are some of the consequences? Are there any articles or scientific data online that I can read about this?

    Thanks!

  2. I've had severe asthma since birth and get an attack at least twice a week. when I smoked weed the smoke would set off my asthma pretty good. But vaping doesn't do that at all. I actually vape when I get an attack it helps allot. You know how a water pipe filters some of the stuff not good for you in weed? Well that's what vaping does.

  3. If I'm not mistaken.. Somewhere around the 220*C range is when you start releasing carcinogens with a vaporizer.. so if you stay under that mark.. Vaping marijuana is a very healthy alternative to smoking.

Btw.. Evidence shows water doesn't really "filter" anything.. the water in a bong is used to cool the smoke.. the water changes color due to ash and particulate that gets sucked into the water.. it's like saying the walls of a pipe "filter" the smoke because resin builds up inside of it

  4. Thanks guys.

I've been vapin' exclusively for about 8 years now. I still have a pulse and breathe pretty well. I still feel pretty good for somebody in his late 50's. I probably wouldn't quallify for MMJ. I don't know the long-term effects yet, but I'm not too worried.

    Science time!

Vaporization techniques are considered to be carcinogen free if calibrated and used properly. To release THC from cannabis, you don't actually have to burn it. In fact, burning it is rather excessive. THC vaporizes at about 185C - 200C (studies have shown that going over 200C can begin to release carcinogens), while the tree itself combusts at a considerably higher temperature than that. Vaporizers work by staying below that combustion point and releasing the THC while avoiding the harmful byproducts caused by smoke. Something to note, though: you usually do not get much, if any CBD from vaporizers.

To answer your question, vaporizing is about as healthy for your lungs as not smoking at all. There is no smoke, nothing to hurt your body. It's as harmful as inhaling water vapor. That is not to say it doesn't have effects on the developing mind or the like, but in terms of lung health it won't be a problem at all.

  8. "It's as harmful as inhaling water vapor"

When you're sick you should really watch this though.. as it could lead to pneumonia..

  9. Thanks alot everyone! Especially you storm crow, for the articles!

  10. Uhm hey!

How certain are you that 220c will also vaporize carcinogens with the THC?
I have a Pax and use it at its highest setting of 410F which is around 210c.

  11. Hi guys, just finished my first grow so i have only asked questions in the forum not feeling qualified to answer any, until this post.
I also have lung problems Strom123,know where you're coming from ,had to stop smoking joints bout 3 years ago bummer,i loved the whole joint ritual. So now I make cup cakes with hash and/or grass to get baked, scuse the pun!.It's a different type of stoned but at least I'm getting stoned.
I've never used a vapouriser so cant compare but is the vapour from a vapouriser not very hot? That would not be good for my lungs.I'm on long term antibs so have to be wee bit sensible.take it easy and i hope your health stays good.
