How far can you top a plant? And, is fimming real?

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by BudHarrington, Sep 3, 2020.

  1. In the past I've just taken off the newest node. Since moving indoors it seems training is a better option, or taking more off the top for an even canopy. I've got some plants right now that could be cut to 1/3 height. I'll probably try it anyway but figured I'd ask, can you cut too much off the top of a plant? I've increased nitrogen recently and the side branches are producing dark leaf, while the new growth on the central column is staying paler, but stretching faster,it's making me rethink how the plant grows..

Also, I tried 'fimming' for the first time, it looked pretty similar to pics of fimmed plants, but it didn't hold, I just ended up with a layer of snub nosed fans. What did I do wrong?

  2. You can top pretty darn hard once the plant is established. I think if you just take a 3rd of the plant’s height and give it a bit to recover before you force flowering it will be just fine.

On your fim, you just didn’t take enough off. It’s a little tricky to get the cut in just the right place.

  3. You can do whatever you want to a plant and 99% of times it's going to come back stronger.

The key is knowing the limits so it'll also make her better and not fuck up her timings.

  4. I'm definitely trying to learn the limits. I've got one plant I'm wanting to cut in half, just waiting for it to recover from transplant. It's begging for it, crowding the lights while the shorter plants suffer. She'll be my test victim.

As for fimming, I guess I'll try again next go around. Really stinks only having a few plants to play with but it's better to learn the hard way sometimes.

  5. I thought I f'd up my fim too, still not really sure. Ended up with the snub-nose fans(in varying degrees on the 4 plants) but the undergrowth? really shot up. Kicked the lowest tops into high gear so they caught up with the middle and also lots of new top sites. Ended up with lots of tops and an even canopy.
That was last run. Just fimmed or fucked up my fim on my current run, lol.

  6. Just to be clear. Fimming is when you snip the very top of the plant but not actually cut the stalk. Give the plant a "bart simpson" haircut just on that little top growth. The idea is to slow that part down and bush the plant out but still retain a middle stalk without a split...

Can you make 1 cut to bring the height down a foot or 2 on a healthy plant. Yes. If you try to do it several places at once you risk shocking. But one cut should be fine.

  7. I'm not a big believer in fimming. I usually top once and train the plant.

    Seems to work pretty good.
