How exactly do you use a digital ballast?

Discussion in 'Advanced Growing Techniques' started by mardanlin, Nov 3, 2009.

  1. Do you just need a ballast and a bulb? Do they plug straight into the wall? Do the bulbs go right in the ballast? I'm really confused as to how you use them.

  2. With any remote ballast, whether it be digital or analog, you will need a power cord and a mogul base socket cord.

The mogul base socket cord will affix to a reflector, or hood. This is where your lamp is screwed into. With a digital ballast, you can use an MH or HPS bulb. Most are dual voltage, either 120v/240v. You need to have an appropriate cord end for the 240v feature.

If you get a digital ballast, make sure it has RF shielding. Some cheaper digital ballasts have had problems with radio frequency interference. One guy on here had the cable company poking around his house in the wee hours of the morning because the interference had shut down internet service to about 1000 customers.

You can usually find a turnkey package deal for a ballast, the appropriate cords and a reflector on ebay for a pretty good deal.

There are some agricultural lights with built in digital ballasts, but those don't have the option of venting the reflector/hood, which is important in a small grow room.

Hope this cleared up your questions...........ask if you have more.
