How efficient are the different extraction methods? Hash, oils etc.

Discussion in 'Harvesting and Processing Marijuana' started by Sylvatican, Jun 12, 2023.

  1. As above really. I've googled the arse out of it but can't find an answer.
When you carry out an extraction, like sifting hash, or doing a solvent extraction like bho or qwiso, what of the good stuff gets left behind in the bud?
Which extraction method is most efficient at getting maximum potential cannabinoids from the starting material, and how do they compare to one another?
I know there will be differences in technique/wash times etc, but there must be a general consensus on this? Anyone have real world testing figures or lab results etc?

    Cheers all!

  2. I'm no expert but from what I've read it seems that a 200 proof ethanol is considered one of the best.,

  3. I'd vote supercritical co2 as best, and what gets left behind is fairly relative to the person doing the extraction. There are scholarly studies on the topic out in the wild but not all are cannabis related.

  4. Depends on strains, some wash better than others. Some BHO better than others. You’ll see when you get to extracting ;)

it’s easy to get lost in the sauce

  5. Are you planning on extracting and don't want to leave anything behind or are you simply curious?

I suppose we can consider smoking bud as extracting and we lose plenty of actives when we smoke. Like Starguy, I'm a fan of anhydrous alcohol which get most of it. If you don't want to leave anything behind then make some of BrassNwood's hash infused oil caps, they are easy to make and as efficient as it gets although there will still be losses due to bioavailability issues.

  6. Sorry for delayed reply, haven't been on in a while...
Where I live testing isn't available, so knowing my mg per edible dose is impossible to know for sure. I'm trying to work out an average cannabinoid content for various home extraction methods, so I can get a ballpark figure for dosing.
At the moment I do an alcohol extraction, evaporate and decarb the resultant oils, then dilute into a carrier oil and put a measured amount in capsules. I'm working on the assumption that my oil contains around 65-70% thc after decarb, and working out doses based on that.
I figure 5g of decarbed, alcohol extracted oil, will contain approx the same level of thc whether it comes from an ounce of amnesia or 2oz of kush trim, for example. I wondered if folks in more legal areas have had various home extracts tested, and how close to the mark I am...
