Hey folks, I'm still new to this whole thing, I'm far too paranoid to grow indoors because of parents and the fear of cops busting in my door lol, and when I was growing outside this season I was too afraid to ask questions about growing because I was paranoid cops might be on these forums looking for people. Basically my question is how do you guys feel safe enough to post about your own grows, or researching new information for new grows without worrying that someone might be watching u, and get ur ip and track you down or something? Is that illegal to do? I live in Canada and I'm not aware of privacy laws like that? I had so many questions to ask when I was growing this season but I didn't want to post anything at the time incase i were tracked, and then my plant fucked up XD. So much to worry about...is it so much to ask to just have my own plant for my own use...
I tried doing that but I couldn't find a good one that you didn't have to pay for. One that didn't slow me down. @DrMengle If thats true thats great.
Plus, cops don't have the time, money, or resources to be logged into Grasscity, finding people that are growing, and attempting to decipher their location from their post content, because that's all they can do if they're on here looking. Just make sure if you're taking pictures with a phone, that your phone isn't geocatching the photo, can leave information about location in the photo file. That's your biggest concern really. Your biggest issue with a grow, is who you tell about it. Loose lips sink ships. You can't trust anyone. Grow for your own personal use, and never tell a soul (except us blades )
Even for the larger scale grows here it's not worth it, they can't anyways. From what I know GC servers aren't even in America so they'd have no authority to get that information. And like Sheldon said above me, keep your mouth shut! don't tell anyone, not your best friend, not your girl, not your brother, not your parents, no one! Not even your dog.
Sweetie, you are just too "small potatoes" for the cops to bother with- unless you have "stepped on someone's toes"! Your parents are more likely to bust you than the cops. Just talking about it is cool- you could be a pathological liar for all the cops know! lol As long as there are no pictures, and you aren't saying that you are growing massive amounts- don't worry! Use responsibly! Don't smoke in a car. Don't tell anyone you are growing! Don't act like someone out of a "Jackass" movie! Granny (toking for well over 40 years, and never busted!)
just to give a heads up, proxy servers, gc servers being based out of a diff country, none of that matters your ISP can still see **************everything************** you see but as others have mentioned, you're too small...also, kind of like the power company with smart meters...busting you will cost them money...especially for an ISP. if an ISP gave away your browsing information/history, a lot of other people would probably stop using that ISP...ISPs wont do that unless they were made to give away their data...but they still have it
It's not even a size issue, it's a jurisdiction issue. LEO is mostly a local affair, so let's say I'm the sheriff in ButtSniff Arkansas -- the only growers I could possibly bust are those in ButtSniff, so even if I could determine each user's geography I sill would have to sift through thousands and thousands of people and posts just in the hope of finding one person in my little jurisdiction? And if I did find someone, I still do not have the basis for a search warrant -- on GC the only thing a person is guilty of is freedom of expression. Nothing illegal in talking about MJ, photos do not necessarily belong to the owner, basically there is nothing about GC that invites legal scrutiny or a warrant. Cops have better and easier ways to bust people than spending hours and hours on a computer weeding through thousands outside of their jurisdiction, in the hope of finding one without enough evidence to do anything about it anyway.
I have to respectfully disagree. The DEA could dedicate a single agent (or team) to investigate grows online and then notify the local authorities. The local's funding is based in part upon arrest and conviction rates. The more the time they have, the more funding they need. Whether to act on it is in the discretion of the local authorities and it may be true that they gave bigger fish to fry, but some may not turn down a free lunch if you know what I'm saying. Also, i think the probable cause hurdle to getting a search warrant isn't impossible to get over. Search warrants are routinely issued based upon information from informants (criminals; crack heads) that can even be unidentified if an officer submits an affidavit that he has used the source in the past and found the information later to be accurate. Now, I don't think the DEA is doing this, and I doubt many (any?) have actually been busted solely upon online activity. Usually, someone gets busted in person and then their online activity is used (if your ISP is subpoenaed) to show intent to distribute ( quantity in possession is prima facia evidence of your intent to distribute) depending on your state law. Overall I think it's relatively safe (otherwise would not be on here) but thought you deserved to hear the truth.

two things make this and every other comment here irrelevant. If you are an American you are protected by freedom of speech and your constitution. This may not mean much to some but it does apply. If you are on here braggin about your gigantic grow and that the cops can't catch you expect there to be trouble. If you are on here asking questions holding discussions and participating in a written or spoken way you are not breaking any law. Anymore than you would be to go to the book store and buy a book about MJ cultivation WHICH the bookstore is LEGALLY selling and back to freedom of speech. For simple forum browsing, Vpn and tor will do, your still not "safe" per say (noone is) but less of a target compared to those with no protection. Unless your a big time grower don't sweat it, just use common sense when posting. Also check out Linux.

But buying a hammer is legal too. That doesn't mean if you beat someone to death with it the prosecutor can't use it as evidence in your murder trial because buying it was legal. There is nothing prohibiting prosecutors from using completely legal activities (freedom of speech) against you. Kind of why we have the right to remain silent. If you got busted in the real world they could use information from your account to strengthen their case. It is also possible that information could be used to support an application for a search warrant, but unless they act on it and catch you, you haven't technically done anything illegal. The argument is mainly academic. Everyone is right that the cops traditionally won't come here for leads. However, as suggested above, don't provoke them.

I'm not worried. I am small potatoes. I live in a medical state and both my wife and I have cards. Additionally the local law enforcement has gone on record to say they are looking for the power tappers and the people who have converted their whole houses to grow. That ain't me babe....
I never said the DEA couldn't do it, I said that law enforcement of drug offenses are mostly at the local level. And the scenario you paint simply won't happen -- LEO is also a very political and territorial affair, and DEA has zero funding to develop leads just to turn them over to local LEO so that local can get their funding. No way. Lastly, while an informant could be a basis for a warrant, talking about MJ is not.
First off if you believe that you can mask your presense here on the net then your foolish. Read up on what the NSA has cooking up in Utah. The facility is so large so big that it has its own Coal Plant on site. Everything down to your text messages will be archived at that facility.
Use TOR https://www.torproject.org/ It routes your traffic through different nodes worldwide and encrypts till the "exit node". Your ISP and by extension the government can see that you are using TOR but they can't see where you are going and what you are doing. This is the safest you can feasibly get, nothing is 100% but this is 99%. Make sure you are using a good anti-virus like AVG (avast) and of course don't post any identifying Info. Also do not use pictures from any GPS enabled devices such as cell phones.
