  1. Back in November I got a new job after searching for a couple months. It's a retail store and the pay is really good for me, a full time college student. I still live with my parents and its literally ten minutes from home so that's awesome. I've worked with the store since day one, got hired on to help setup shop and then work stock room and counter occasionally. All of my other original coworkers have quit except two. With all of these new people, most of which are young kids, there is no shortage of help. However, lately I've been getting called almost everyday im off to cover for those who don't show up. At first I would cover for them, because they were short on help. But now its to the point where I honestly don't have a day off that they don't call and ask me to work. We have a specific rule for this reason, you're only allowed to call out under emergencies unless you've already found someone to cover your shift. So why is it that everyday someone doesn't show up, doesn't call, and doesn't even have someone to work for them? Yet they get in no trouble at all.

TLDR; Should I feel bad for not answering my phone when work constantly calls and ask me to come in for someone who hasn't shown up?

  2. Don't ignore their there calls, tell them your busy. If you really do cover shifts that much they should understand.

  3. Back when I was doing shift work I would cover peoples' shifts whenever I could.

More shifts=more money=moved out from home at 17=freedom=more weed

  4. They don't own you man, your time off is your time off.

  5. more shifts for more pay!

  6. I already work 25-30 hours a week on top of my classes. I need the use the rest of my free time to do my course work and projects.

And don't get me wrong, its not like I blatantly ignore their calls. If they are to call and I miss it, I return their call and tell them that I am busy. I just tend to feel bad about not going in, even though I am legitimately busy with other things.

  7. Just tell them you've made plans. It's your day off, they shouldn't expect shit from you. You should only be covering them if you want the extra cash extra hours will provide.

  8. Sometimes I don't answer, sometimes I do. But just remember the more you say yes the better you look in their eyes, you will usually be the first they call. You become someone they can count on. Which equals more hours, better pay, moving up, etc.
