how big are the pots in SOG

  1. I'm a little confused about the size of pots that should be used in a SOG type grow with my closet setup. I have read that you try to fit as many pots containing the plants in your floor as possible to cover the area, which would mean that you would want 'as small size' pots as possible to get many plants (say 7-10 plants in a closet). but then other people say that dope grows best in a big pot as possible, to quote from a book by a well known grower:

"Both seedlings are 7 weeks old. One gallon (4 litre) plant is stunted and overfertilized. Five gallon (20 litre) plant received the same treatment but is healthy. Use large pots."

which way should I go, I would be able to fit 3-4 20 litre pots into my closet but this is a small number of actual plants. go for the small number and big pots? I know this seems to make sense but it clashes with other info about SOG grows which say to use many pots (many more than 3 or 4) and get a lot of plants that don't grow very high. what are other people's successes?

one other thing I wanted to know is if I have only a couple plants what happens if they turn male, whereas if I had many then at least I will end up with a couple of females. keep a backup of flowering-ready veg plants in a separate chamber and just lose some time?

  2. Use larger pots. You'll have problems with your plants becoming root bound if you don't. The beauty of a scrog is that you'll have all the areas of your plant capable of producing bud doing it as well as possible. If you had the space overcrowded with different plants you'd have them overlapping a lot and thus losing the appeal of this grow method.
Edit: Oops, I was referencing scrog.. really you should use that instead anyway. It should be stickied on at least one of the grow forums.

  3. I was going to do a SCROG but am actually instead opting for a SOG (Sea Of Green) for my first time around. so I'm hoping to just grow the plants in their individual pots straight up without attempting to tie them onto an overhead screen and get a flat layer of all bud action.

I will attempt a SCROG later after I have some more experience because I think it will be easier to grow them as separate plants without meshing them all together onto the screen. for example I don't know what I would do if one of the plants turn male and that plants needs to be removed from the screen. ouch! I think the scrog/screen may confuse me for my first ever grow and end up a potential mesh. if the plants were guaranteed females I would be tempted.

I think SCROG is suited to a closet and improves the yield but my interests are in the simplicity at the moment, and learning the skills.

    thanks for your thoughts

  4. sog is done with clones. clones are mature, once they grow roots, you can veg them for as long or short as you want before flowering. so you dont need big pots if you do a bunch of clones that you only let get to a 1- 1 1/2 feet

  5. is that 1 - 1 1/2 feet when you are ready to flower them, so they will grow much bigger after that during flowering? (and need to be transplanted).

if it is then it seems the pot size can be around 1 gallon for the veg and 3-5 for the flower. this would mean more transplanting, from the small cup, to the medium (veg) pot, to the large (flower) pot through the stages. I wonder if it would be best to ditch the medium pot and transplant from the small cup to the final large pot. the big pot can be used for veg and flower. I think it would be a hassle to transplant from a 1 gal into a 3 gal.

am I right to assume that a separate veg and flower chamber is the way to go?

  6. yea, remember were all stoners. i forgot to mention that after the clone roots you put it into the a big pot enough to suport a 2' plant at the least. seems like you got the idea, yea its good to have two chambers, keep the mother you take clones off of and the rooting clones in one that are on a 24/0 or 18/6 schedule and the (youll also veg them here) then have a seprate one for flowering.

  7. I was wondering where the mother goes. you sit her in with all the other vegging plants then and when you take out the plants to the flowering separate area you just leave the mother in there all alone like, or with any other vegging plants (including rooting clones) that are't ready yet to flower.

so the mother never flowers, and she is kept under control height-wise by the activity of cutting her regularly for new clones?

  8. Firebird and COrnflakes you have helped me well. you have a new perspective to add to my view

I am looking forward to 'the beginning' (or is that many happy beginnings) of my first ever grow. just like a Volcano bag about to be slipped between the gums, the anticipation is killing me.
