Homemade bowl question

    I've been making a bowl out of the metal part that surrounds my guitar cable, but I still need a filter to keep the weed from falling through. I found a piece from the inside of an old iPod headset, does anyone know if it's safe to smoke through this? I put it under the lighter and it went dark and gave off a bit of a burnt smell. If anyone knows if you can smoke through this, it would be really appreciated.

    why not just buy some screens? Or better yet, just drop $10 on a spoon. Of course, if that is not an option then apples always do the trick too.
