Home Depot "grow Lights"

  1. well i went to home depot looking for some HPS bulbs and came across a bunch of diff wattage bulbs that say "grow Lights" on the box. The box says suitable for growig indoor plants.

Would these be enough for my plant, or does it have to be HPS or any of the other high powered bulbs

  2. Tell us the specs (Watts, Lumens, Etc)

  3. Yes, those are the things you need to look at when searching for lighting. You can buy HPS lighting systems online if you can't find any locally. I can't find any around here in any hardware stores, so I'm probably going to buy mine online.

  4. i know what he means, they're shaped like floods, but they're grow lights and they come in various sizes and wattage...the only thing is they're blue spectrum, they'll work great for vegging, but when you want buds you may want to switch to something else...

  5. The flood like lights you are speaking of are NO GOOD just a waste of power and money... These lights produce way to much heat for the amount of light they produce... IMO you will be better off spending your money on a couple of CFLS or even a HPS security light..oger

  6. nah they sell flood lights with CFL bulbs that are 6500k and 65 watts.

  7. yeah, they're not floods, i think they're just daylight CFLs that are shaped like floods....CFL's are way cheaper...like 2 30 watters are cheaper than one of those 65W grow lights....

  8. 30 they are actually 32w compact flourescents and 2 of those will in no way be as bright as the 65watt flourescent flood light. Just because the wattage is around the same does not mean the Equivalent Watts to incandescent will be the same.

32w compact flourescent is 100watts equivalent. 2 of these will only be 200watts equivalent and only 1700lumens, not to mention only 2700K color temperature, they now only recently came out with the daylight version and the specs on that is not that great either which is 1850 lumens at the correct color temperature of 6500k for Vegging. to this is still only 3700lumes at PEAK performance at best.

65w Flourescent security light, depending on the brand is 300-500watts equivalent ranging from 4550-7000 lumens at 6500K color temperature

the 65watt security lights are only 25-29 bucks and trust me they are worth every penny over compact flourescents.

To get the performance of the Security light you would need to run 3 compact flourescents which would be

    2x 1850 lumens (32w) = 3700 lumens
    1x 900 lumens (15w) = 900 lumens

thats 79 watts of used electricity compared to the 65 watts of the flood flourescent, which if you get the one from Designers Edge is 6800 lumens.

I would suggest the flood light for very minimal cost over compact flourescents any day.

  9. if i got two 65-watt flourescent flood lights, how many clones could i grow to maturity? could i do more using the scrog mehtod?

  10. i got 10 23W CFLs for less than 8 dollars...

  11. Just came from Home Depot and I'm not dissing or anything but the 100w equilavent bulbs only take 25ish watts. They also put out about 1200 lumens each. The specs on the daylight bulbs are also pretty similar in lumens and wattage.

This dosen't change your point, just correcting some info.

The main reason people get cfl's are because they are a LOT easier to manuever around in abnormal shaped or small growing rooms where big flourescents wouldnt fit. CFL's are also dirt cheap if you buy in the multiple bulb packs.

  12. do cfl need a balass to work like hps?

  13. Technically they do but the ballast is built into the bulb so, no, you dont have to buy anything besides the bulb and the socket. Cool eh? :)

  14. Is this what you are talking about:
65 Watt Compact Fluorescent Replacement Bulb

  15. The 65w security lights I tried actually had the ballast mounted in the fixture separate from the bulb, so you could not take the bulb out and use it in another socket. I don't know what home depot carries but I would expect it's of similar design. They are excellent for vegging though, very good route to go for 1 or 2 plants.

  16. If you have some spare time could you find a link to the product on Home Depot's website?

You might also be able to help me with my question i posted here.

    Thanks

  17. dont buy cfl floods. their lumen output sucks and you do not get the proper dispersion.
read my post here about lumen dispersion with cfl.

    http://forum.grasscity.com/general-indoor-growing/258404-2-points-cfl-revolution.html

you want between 30-105 watt cfl with a lumen to watt rating of at least 70. you want 75% 5500k-6500k for veg, and about 25% 2700k light output. this is to cover both chlorophyll a and b.

i bought all my equipment at home depot. it is a one stop shop for a medical grow, as they carry everything and them some. right now im building an aquaponics lab from equipment purchased from home depot.

  18. thats good and all but it still dosnt help me decide how many cfl's i need, please see the link in my previous thread.

  19. The flood light I'm talking about is out of production as far as I know. Wal Mart used to carry it. It was a Lights of America 65w flood light, 6800 lumens at 6500k, way over 70 lumens per watt so yes it is quite efficient enough. All theory aside, I used it in multiple scenarios and it worked very well. Till it broke down but what do you expect from a $11 Wal Mart brand like lights of america. If you can find something like this, and want to stay on the conservative side of lighting, you might be able to light the tops of two compact plants with one light, and then supplement with side lighting. I'd recommend one per plant though.

  20. ive seen people grow with work lights. my friend stole a 1000 watt stand up worklight and just removed it from its pole and pointed it at the plants and worked like a charm. ive seen people complete plants with plain 75W flouresent bulbs. ive seen people complete grows with flouresent tubes even. if your plants start to stretch just buy some more.
