    This is major:

Discovery! Earth-Size Alien Planet at Alpha Centauri Is Closest Ever Seen - Yahoo! News

Alpha Centauri is actually a binary system (two suns/stars), and they are almost exactly the same (size/luminosity/composition) of our sun!

Edit - this is not about Gliese 581 - the star 22 light years away where they found 3 to 6 planets - one possibly being in the habitable zone (3 - 6 planets because some are still unconfirmed). And the star (Gliese 581) itself is a Red Dwarf - way different than our star/sun.

Alpha Centauri is the closest star (system) to us at 4.36 light years away or 25,800,000,000,000 miles (25.8 trillion - a hop, skip and a jump).

  2. ya man they've been talking about this for months now. pretty awesome stuff!

now only if we could see what this planet looks like :(

  3. What? For real? This is old news?

Shit. And I've been hoping/wondering if and when they would find a planet there. I'll bet there are quite a few planets there with at least one in the habitable zone.

  4. I just checked up on this. It looks like it's fresh news. They've been speculating for a long time, but this is new news - the first confirmed planet in the Alpha Centauri system, and a rocky one at that.

  5. Wasn't this on the news a long time ago? Still pretty cool either way

  6. i know i heard about this a couple months ago, not sure if it was confirmed at the time but they did say its roughly the size of earth.

could be a completely different story im thinking of, it seems like they find a new earth-sized planet every few months.

  7. Am I in a timewarp?

  8. Maybe people are thinking about Gliese 581g?

    Good post.

  9. Google "Alpha Centauri" and click on "News" on the left. Everything is from this month.

Same with just the web pages.

What is the meaning of this? What kind of tricks are you kids trying to play on me? :p

Yes, I will guarantee that's it.

Fuck Gliese 581 at this point - we're talking Alpha fucking Centauri now! 4.36 light years away.

  11. so 4.3 light years = 43 trillion kilometers?

  12. That is correct, sir. Pack your shit. I'll meet you at your place in an hour and we'll begin the hike there. Bring good shoes.

  13. Shit man if my calculations are correct(they usually aren't) that is about 2-3 lifetimes....

Hope we got enough weed for the voyage, will also need to bring some fine female specimens to reproduce with to have someone to carry on the voyage...

Damn, we will need much more planning lol :bongin:

  14. I was thinking about this. Wouldn't this be unethical towards the children?

"Oh yeah, btw, you're the middle generation; you didn't get to depart from Earth and you won't get to set foot on the new planet - sucks to be you lol"

  15. Lmao yeah that's a pretty hefty boot to the face..

Oh hi son.. You're born on this ship and you're going to die on it......yeah.. lol :bongin: Atleast we will have an unlimited supply of weed lol

Edit - this would also cause some incest issues.. Would have to bring multiple generations of different blood lines to avoid this.. Not good at math but we would need like... 8 females and 8 males at start... I think.. Idk as I said I am not a math person :bongin:

30 fine women and 15 men. It's just fair that way...

  17. Ok so now we know that theres another habitable planet in the neighborhood right? we gotta quit all this petty squabblin and get the tech to do this shizz

  18. so.. do we know if its the right distance from its stars to support earth like life?

also, wouldnt it be crazy if there is a planet out there larger than our sun with intelligent life on it? man i love thinking about the possibility of aliens.

Technically life can exist anywhere given the right circumstances..

For example life has recently been discovered in some of the most hostile enviroments on earth.. including toxic volcanic pools.. and extremely cold and hostile ecosystems..

If life can be abstained in such harsh enviroments, who is to say that a species elsewhere in the universe can't adapt to their own enviroment over millions of years of evolution(like humans..)

All in all, life on other planets is pretty much statistically and logically possible.. You can't think about it and downright deny that life cant exist elsewhere.. and if you did I would pretty much call you a fuckin' idiot lol

    Cheers :bongin:

Edit - article to back up my blasphemous claims

It is also heavily speculated that Mars' ecosystem was heavily similar to earths.. That means there could still be life underground, sheltered deep beneath the harsh exoskeleton of the smoldering deadly planet..
