Holland Confusion?

  1. Inb4rage, I used the search bar and I didn't find the results I needed.

So, is the ban on tourists being able to use the coffee shops active? Is it being enforced? Or do Coffee shops still don't care about the ban?

I might be traveling to Amsterdam this summer.

  2. I think they decided not too enforce it. Could be wrong though.

    Kush

  3. There is no ban.

  4. that^

I think some smaller towns on the borders of the netherlands and other countries have banned tourists. But not Amsterdam

  5. Some coffeeshops in some towns along some parts of the border, and they did so voluntarily. The government here just likes to talk a lot.

  6. Actually, the council did shut down many coffee shops on the Belgium borders due to people hoping the border to pick up their weed. Holland was receiving a lot of pressure from these country's and decided to shut down a number of coffee shops close to the border.

I don't think it will ever go into effect in Amsterdam. They could no way afford to do it.

  7. Be careful before you plan your trip. The government absolutely does and intends to follow through with this. It is scheduled to go into effect in May. The government intends to include every coffee shop in the country although I don't remember what their rollout schedule is.

The latest I have heard is that the coffee shops do not intend to follow the law which I agree with. They would go out of business. However, you should be aware that the government position of tolerance to tourists who use cannabis is changed and you will be at greater risk IMO.

What remains to be seen is whether to police on the street will actively enforce this or decide not to change a situation that they probably thought worked ok as it is. It is just going to take some time to see how this all shakes out. I'm no expert on dutch laws or politics, so I can only guess that it could turn out any of several ways, but I would proceed cautiously and understand that the atmosphere in the future may not be the same as it used to be.

Good luck and here's to hoping the conservative Dutch government pulls its heads from its own arses.

  8. They say they intend to go through with this. What they say and what they do are often two entirely different things, mainly because often they encounter heavy resistance from the opposition. We have a very fragile government at the moment. I wouldn't be surprised if they fall before this year ends, it happened to the last government as well. I don't see a whole lot changing in our cannabis policy in the forseeable future. Also, the socialist party is currently the largest in the polls, and if they win the next election they will undoubtedly reverse all of this.
This is a ridiculous plan, and the government knows it. They've been talking about this for so long, and all it's ever been is talk. This whole thing started because there was a period of some violence (not much compared to other countries) along the border because of foreign drug cartels, but that was probably over a year ago and I haven't heard anything about it since. I don't believe this plan is anything more than a panicky solution to a problem that no longer exists.

  9. This is addressed so often! someone from holland needs to make a permanent thread about it!

  10. Yeah really no offence to OP, but I'm kinda tired of answering this question 100 times. :p

  11. Yeah, I think I've answered that question 4 times in the past week lol:p

  12. What has your answer been?

  13. Doh! look up a few posts. He just said it. Basically he added clarification to what I said. The government is still holding a hard line and saying they will implement the weedpass to keep tourists from buying. Many (most?) of the local governments look like they are not going to enforce it.

You're just going to have to watch and see how it shakes out and for a little while, you might not be able to be quite as open about it. Obviously, he is from the Netherlands and I am not, so read his post and see for yourself.

I think ultimately that free enterprise will win out and this silly law will die a quiet death.

  14. The government wants the ban, but it's going to be hard to enforce by the looks of it :)

  15. I know, I'm from Holland too. I just asked what his answer would have been because obviously different answers are possible.

  16. Yeah they can't afford to do it in a lot of places.. Including the province I'm in thank god.
