Holes in the bottom of my bucket?

  1. I know this might seem like a simple question but, I have a 5 gallon bucket I am about to put a plant in and I was wondering if I should cut holes in the bottom of the bucket so the water can drain through my grow, or should I just leave it solid?

  2. Yes. Cut the holes. You need drainage.

  3. ya cut holes. I like to put an inch or two of gravel at the bottom to help airate the soil more and allow better drainage. you dont want excess water to build up in the soil or your roots will start to rot and eventually kill the plant. They need air in the soil to stay healthy and function properly. Most people mix perlite in their soil to assure plenty of airation. You can get it for like 4 bucks a bag at Lowe's or Home Depot. I use this mixture:
    1 part perlite
    2 parts soil

  4. ^Agreed.

Careful on the perlite you buy, though -- MiracleGro puts time-released ferts even in their perlite...

  5. Why do those bastards have to fert everything they produce?
