Hiring a personal lawyer

  1. Like Tom Hagen.

I want a personal lawyer and accountant that I can call at a moments notice for legal advice.

How much do you think it would cost?

  2. depending on the quality your looking for.

avereage retainer would be like 1500-2000

  3. How is that calculated? is that a weekly rate?

I was thinking about finding somebody fresh out of law school who passed the bar... but needs work

  4. Do you break the law often?

  5. Technically every time you and I smoke, we're breaking the law (Unless you're medical)

    So technically, very often...?

  6. a retainer is just a "gesture" that you are calling this lawyer your own.

then they bill by the hour, and suplies.
usually you have to send a cheque when your retainer is about to run out.

in some cases a lawyer will wait untill judgment to get paid, but this would be quite rare

  7. consider paralegal then

  8. I guess thats true, i mean i ONLY blaze at home inside so its not really like sketchy.

  9. Make friends with an accounting major (im one, and id help my friends if i could), and you probably have a family friend that's a lawyer. Get their number.

    Edit: Free.

Edit 2: Why would you need an accountant? Just curious.

  10. Lawyer here... you dont pay anything for a retainer. You are either billed by the hour or on a contingency basis if you are suing someone. For just general advice, you would probably be billed by the hour. For someone just out of law school (I'm 1 year out), you could probably negotiate a low hourly rate.

  11. I'm self-employed and I have an accountant (sole proprietor) to do my taxes. I can call/email him any time to get questions answered -- which only happens a few times per year. I don't even think he adds it into my tax bill, but if he does that's fine. I just pay him once per year when he does my taxes.

Everyone runs their businesses differently, so no hard and fast rules.

    What do you practice?
In Canada lawyer must give you consultation free (usually up to 1hr).
In the firm I work for without retainer your simply just a "tire kicker"

  13. I know just the guy for you

  15. Get a good lawyer with experience. Never be cheap with lawyers dude...

  16. If you have no concept of how much accountants cost, you don't need one. lol

Keep in mind that lawyers just out of law school are having a heck of a time finding jobs and are desperate for money since they also can't get a regular job due to being "overqualified"

  17. Dude I want my own Saul Goodman.

  18. Are you saying that accountants are expensive?

  19. I don't know, did I say that? No. No, I didn't... I'm one of those weird people who says what they actually say. :smoke:
