Hey question about smoking and my metabolism.

Discussion in 'Seasoned Marijuana Users' started by OneJointToGo, Apr 2, 2010.

  1. Does smoking weed speed up your metabolism?

Ya know how SOME people get the munchies after they smoke some herb? I'm one of em haha, and I was wondering if I didn't eat after I smoked, but still got that hungry feeling, is that my metabolism being sped up and calories burned or am I just to high right now.

I'm sorry if this was posted before but I'm on my phone and for some reason the search button won't function correctly..

  2. The speed of your metabolism is determined by genetics, not smoking weed

  3. well yeah you get the muchies because your metabolism is sped up short term because your heart is working faster, etc. some people lose weight if they smoke a lot of weed...but good luck resisting the munchies. :hello:

  4. Is there any studies done on this? I'm doing it for a research paper for something kinda important and I want others opinions for a general point of view.

  5. THC tricks your brain into thinking you are hungry. It doesn't speed up your metabolism.

  6. Does it really? Again, I'm still on my phone, I hardly ever go on a real PC again and i'm to lazy to search through webpages on my phone via google..

Does THC really trick your brain, or does it really speed up your metabolism, shits confusing but I wanna get to the bottom of it!

I know smoking cigs has caused me to lose a decent amount of weight, *im not trying to lose weight i'm an MMA fighter and compete at 155lbs lightweight, just asking*.

  7. Your brain confuses THC with the hormone responsible for giving a 'hungry' feeling, making your brain think that you are hungry.

  8. Well, I've never seen a fat pothead, so Im going to go with yes it does speed it up.

  9. Thats completely false.
The reason I say that is because it does not 'trick' your brain, but it stimulates hunger.

Scientists have found that marijuana-like substances naturally produced in the brain stimulate appetite. The finding not only offers clues to treating obesity but also explains why people tend to feel hungry after smoking up on pot.
The study suggests endocannabinoids are part of the brain's complex system for controlling when and how much we eat. These chemicals are similar to the active ingredient in marijuana but don't make people high.
To find out how endocannabinoids work, scientists genetically engineered some mice so receptors in their brain couldn't respond to the chemicals. This caused mice to eat less than normal.
    Smoking up an appetite
The findings support the assumption that marijuana activates receptors involved in increasing appetite.
Dr. George Kunos is the scientific director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism and led the study.
Kunos said his results suggest endocannabinoids are part of the complex neural circuitry controlled by leptin, a hormone that tells the brain when it is time to lose weight. Leptin also reduces levels of other appetite-enhancing substances.
Scientists don't know how the body creates endocannabinoids or precisely how they work. But this study shows they can work independently of other appetite triggers.
Kunos suggests efforts to control weight gain or loss with a single drug likely won't work because there are many back-up systems to overcome

  10. 1017 brick squaaaaddd

  11. +Rep. I stand corrected, Keep this guy around.

  12. Marinol (which is pure THC) is used to stimulate hunger.

  13. Dead-on.

  14. Thanks man + rep to you.

  15. No, it is right... in fact, you just repeated precisely what I just said

When the body is in need of food, a chemical is produced that tells your brain that you are hungry. When you smoke, the THC mimics the same chemical that causes the hunger feeling, so your brain assumes that you are in need of food and makes you feel hungry. Essentially, the THC tricks your brain, becuase you may not actually need food, but your brain thinks it does becuase of the THC that you just injested.

  16. It definitely helps regulate my appetite.. there are days where I'll barely eat anything because the thought of food makes me sick, so therefore my metabolism gets fucked and slows down because there's nothing to digest. When I wake n bake my appetite is good for the rest of the day, so instead of my body clinging to fat it all gets metabolized through and I lose weight.

This is something a few other friends of mine have noticed, so I'm not just being crazy here. Before I started smoking, my weight was 125. When I smoke daily for a week or so, my weight starts to drop. Smoking for a month straight the lowest I got was 118, which is technically underweight for my height but I'd be eating regularly and getting all the nutrition I need, including the ever important Vitamin THC ;)
