This is the classic film you may have heard about. Made 80 years ago, it was made to encourage farmers to grow hemp during World War II (about 5 years before I was born!). Since our source of hemp fiber for non-rotting ropes for the Navy was cut off by the Japanese, hemp was desperately needed. Later, after the war was over, the film "disappeared" and it's existence was denied by the government! (Just another lie about cannabis told by our government.) But eventually a copy surfaced and was made public. The first article has the short video (length is 13:43), while the second article has more details about the film. Well hemp that they grew then had very little thc in it. My grandpa was a farmer and he was required to grow a certain number of acres because he had a small government loan to pay off his farm. He said it paid way better than corn or beef. We could see it growing in ditches even in the 70's.
There’s an old Ag Dept guide around here that Granny brought that’s all about growing hemp. I have it in my books and I think it’s older than ww2.
at the start of the 20th century their were just 2 hemp phenols in the USA both non thc , by ww2 both strains had been interbreed so much that as rope they were worthless, one strain was from Europe bought in by the German settlers of the 1830s, the most popular rope making strain, the 2nd strain from China with the railway workers in California, not a rope maker but more of a herbal tonic once crossed they were poor ropes By now the US Navy were screaming for more rope the US Govt of the time wiped the hemp law, but soon reverted once the war was over DuPont the chemical company developed a 'plastic' rope that won the day if not the navy war, called NYLON after London - New York and even today years later bits of it can still be seen floating on the beaches of the south pacific and Australia...like all plastic it don't rot anyone who has worked on boats will know NYLON is crap and burns your hands very quick, and holds standard knots poorly
@Vee Thank you for the trivia on the nylon name- that was one I didn't know! And you are absolutely right about the pollution from plastics! Our great-grandkids will still be dealing with the mess we are leaving them! And cannabis has been used "forever" in China as medicine! Sometime around 2500 BC (~4500 years ago), Shen Nung, the "Red Emperor" wrote a herbal that gives the first written record of the medical cannabis. But even earlier, there are these- Archaeobotanical evidence of the use of medicinal cannabis in a secular context unearthed from South China. You are so correct, I can dig into this stuff, and cannabis, all day. It was probably you that posted it but we all had a nice discussion on here about that pipe and pot found in the cave from somewhere. Hemp is legal here in SC but a long way from being celebrated like Melons or peaches. One just about needs secret service clearance to grow it and it’s registered on gps. It’s all a good old boy game and no surprise that a wildly popular and wealthy retired football coach got one of the first hemp permits for his farm. Tho it’s risky I still get some kind of devilish grin when I grow dope. And I love the “dope” reference as anytime they bust somebody here they make sure to use the most demeaning terms possible. Dope, poison, drugs, etc.
my source for most of this is from the book....(above) by McPartland and Clarke about 2years back, the constant reference to NDC and DC drove me nuts ...lol ... Spoiler NSC = Non Drug Cannabis (strain) and DC Drug Cannabis ..the one with thc .
