Help with quantum board.

Discussion in 'Lighting' started by Birdman1984, Jul 10, 2019.

  1. Hi everybody so I’m looking into quantum boards for lighting a 5x5 tent and don’t know the first place to start? Does anybody have a link for one that’d be suitable for a 5x5 tent? I’m in Canada... how hard are the diy ones to put together? Once it’s up and running do I ever have to do anything else with it or just leave it alone? Complete newb to QBs here so any advice to point me in the right direction would be awesome!!

  2. If you want quality id go with an HLG board
    Quantum Boards
@Tbone Shuffle will be able to help you with choosing which boards to use.

The DIY part is relatively easy, pretty much all the wiring is done with plug and play connectors. You will want to build some kind of frame to attach your lights to and a way to hang them. Pretty simple stuff really.
There are many ways you could do this, here's one example:

Yup @Tbone Shuffle is the man when it comes to knowing about the most on making LED grow lights at t least the Samsung QB's
I have put together two of the Samsung qb's both were 620 watt led grow lights .
I have also assembled 3 Led supply Cree /cob light kits , two 150 watts lights and one 75 watts led grow light .

I would never buy the parts to do anther Cree/Cob led light again
375 watts I had about 1400.00 bucks into it .
The Samsung grow light assembly for 1240 watts was about 1500.00 .

On the Samsung QB's you have to buy the plexi glass to protect the LED's or at least I do ..
and a way to hang the light if you are assembling the lights from scratch .

I will be buying at least one more 620 watts worth of QB's for my grow tent .
putting me at about 3000 watts for my three grow rooms .
I have a dozen 300 watt mars lights I still use in my veg/clone room .
The mars lights are actually 111 watts each and not the 300 watts as advertised ,, i

My double oven circuit in my home is a 240 AC v with a 40 amp breaker .so I don't turn on both ovens and all the burners at the same time .
I am stealing about 7.5 amps total to run 1800 plus watts worth of Samsung Quantum Boards ..

LED lights are all operated by DC voltage . on my Samsung QB's they are over 150 dc Volts at 2600Ma
my point is it would be un wise to get zapped by that kind of DC voltage .
Make your lights safe for you to be around .
I also make sure the lights have some air movement around them .

  4. They've always had a bit of a markup in Canada. HLG does have a Canadian site.
Horticulture Lighting Group Canada Premium LED Gardening Grow Lights

It's limited on what products they sell and the prices are high, but I noticed they do have the qb96 v2's.
If you want actual HLG products it's probably your best bet.

The minimum I would run in a 5x5 is 6 of them.
    QB96 Elite V2 Engine

It's all the light you need for veg and bloom in that area. They have a very wide spectrum with a lot of blue that averages out to about a 3500k rating which is a good veg spectrum. You'll just want to dim them all the way for starting veg on the current dimmer and creep it up as they can tolerate as they get more plant material accumulated.

Start at 36" or so and work your way down to 18" in flower or whatever they can tolerate as close as 14".

Use 3 meanwell HLG-320h-54a drivers to each 2 boads in parallel. You'll have a max watt capacity of about 1100 watts or so but you'll probably run it around the 900 watt level for flower. You'll have the watt capacity to push to up to max 1100 if you want though.
HLG-320H-54A - MEAN WELL - LED Power Supplies

You can hang each board from a set of screws/nuts, a pack of 6" trout leaders and a ratcheting light hanger. Then you can adjust the spread and light distance of each independently.

I own one of this exact combo I describe with the two HLG qb96 v2 boards on a meanwell HLG-320h-54a driver in parallel. It's very impressive. The most impressive out of all the boards I own.

It's an expensive setup but if you have the money for it you'll be happy and it will pay you back in a few crops. If that is sticker shock to you then you should check out the alternative to qb boards thread in the lighting section for info on ordering near half price products of similar build from alibaba. Those are at own risk though even though most have good luck with them. HLG invented the board lighting tech and of all the Chinese imitations I've seen nobody has copied the qb96 so you can't replace it from alibaba like the qb288.

Just some pics everyone else has seen of my 2 qb96 simple hanging and wiring setup to the driver I described in parallel.

  5. When your budget allows if you wanted to upgrade in the future you could add a 3rd qb96v2 to each of those drivers so there's 3 on each and a total of 9 for more even coverage and closer light distance/better penetration. It would also work the leds into a lower current range for more efficiency. LED's run more efficient the lower in current they are ran but when running only 6 you need to run them harder to cover the same area.

  6. Do you just grow with those in an open space at the end of your bed? Lol if so niiiccee

  7. That was just where I hung them when I first turned them on for testing.

As you probably know since you own a few qb boads pictures do them no justice at all. They look dim in pictures compared to real life. Haven't seen a person that built a board yet that wasn't super impressed when they see it come on for the first time whether it's a qb120 or a new qb288rspec. You're without exception sitting there going, "How can it be that bright for that many watts?" you scratch your head and rub your eyes because you're probably seeing streaks from looking at it.

I put in a qb120 for a porch light. It's so impressive outside at night. Looks like some kind of ultimate flood light and it's 60 watts. It actually looks a little like a little league stadium light. If my neighbors were closer they might be mad about how bright it is.

  8. I've been running qb lights since early 2017. I added the qb96's to my bloom setup so they're not the only lights in there. I have 2 288v2's from invisible sun I was given as an appreciation gift for help on these forums. I threw the sticker they gave me in the package on the front of my qb96 ghetto light frame I built to get the lights closer to the top of the tent for my monster revegged blueberry.

I bloom in a 4x4x82" tall grow area. Left side is two 288v2 boards in 3500k on an HLG-320h-c2800a in series. Center is two qb96v2's in parallel on an HLG-320h-54a in parallel. Right is two qb304v1 boards also 3500k on a meanwell 240h-c1050a in series. The Red strip is a qb18 which is deep red and far red mix on an HLG-40h-24a.

Everything is dimmed to about half power except the red strip. Running about 1000ppfd or 66,000 lux at the top of the canopy in bloom. Plant is sagging and doesn't look as good as earlier pics because so many tops have fallen over from weight. Some colas are upside down around the corner fan. Just now finishing cleaning out the flower tent today. I'm a busy guy. It takes forever with a plant this size. Over 2 pounds with larf counted.

  9. Yea the qbs are amazingly bright. I am still getting them figured out I am only running 2 in my 4x4 with flowering plants. I think with these higher quality plants I have going this time I will be able to use them correctly and see amazing resaults. They did get my small single cola plants super dense and fattened up real good.

  10. I have yet to see even the worst grower get under 1g/watt with them. That seems to be no problem whatsoever. Most skilled growers are over 1.5g/watt with qb's or even up to near 2.0 for the gurus who have nothing but spare time for the garden.

  11. I need to get some porch light pictures at night I can post of a view of how bright the yard is. It replaced a 150 watt hps flood light and it's easily twice as bright if now 3 times as bright.

  12. Just gonna throw this out there incase you want to save some money, or incase HLG is out of stock. You can buy very good quantum boards on Alibaba from a few suppliers and outfit your 5x5 for probably 30 percent of the cost.they also have more options for spectrum.

  13. I took apart the HPS light and wired the incoming power to the power supply for the board and jammed it into the cone shaped hood. Worked perfect. The board is tucked so far under the eve it gets no rain really. I know I need to replace that board. I'm actually renting. As soon as this place is mine I'm fixing that fucked up board on the front and painting.

  14. I appreciate that but if you read my previous post I mentioned alibaba and the alternative to qb boards thread in the lighting section. Personally they're great but like I said no alibaba company is making a qb96. They're the best grow light boards on the market IMO. The new qb288 rspec is an imitation with not as good of a light spectrum. They altered the white samsung board spectrum to make it more like the qb96 which is lumiled diodes and not samsung. The qb96 has the power capacity of two qb288 boards with 1/3rd the diodes. Pretty amazing really.

  15. For a personal grow after a few years on the same lights I would feel better with real HLG over alibaba but maybe I'm a snob. I don't own any alibaba products.

  16. I almost pulled the trigger on a board from Alib till I saw @TboneShuffle and others were growing with the QB9's and I went that way. I was shocked when I first saw how small it was but it is Amazingly bright!

  17. Mix of white which is very blue leaning, red, and deep red as well. 3 color not 2 like many of the imitation 288 boards that copy the spectrum.

  18. Thanks for clearing that up man, sorry I didnt see the mention of alibaba. And no you're not a snob Haha :p, perhaps you just have a larger bank roll than some of us lol ! That's the only thing restricting me from getting HLG.. although for my next purchase I may have to look into the 96's ! They sound too good to be true Haha
