Hey everyone- long time no post, Well my girlfriends birthday is coming up and I got her a few little things but I would really like to make her something nice, and I have a pretty specific idea of what I want to do. I would like to make a painting on one of those canvases, with the background being black and in the middle would be her initials( NJJ) and on each letter the top 3rd would be painted green, the middle 3rd would be painted yellow, and the bottom 3rd would be painted green. The only problem is not only do I have no art supplies,I have no knowledge of painting at all. I seriously have no clue on what would be the best way to go about making this. ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated. I know I haven't posted here in forever but I knew this would be a good place to seek some advice, so any of you art inclined stoners out there please help me out, because I am severely lacking in art skills and creative ability in general haha Also please forgive the sloppiness of this post, I am drunk, its late, and I dont feel like using correct grammar and what not. fight me. THANKS!!!!
You're in luck... painting/studio art is my college major. Your best bet if you've never really painted before is to go to some kind of art store (Pearl Paint, AC Moore, a local store, or something similar). You can buy pre-stretched canvas in various sizes, for relatively cheap. As far as paint... you can choose either oil or acrylic but not both. Acrylic might be a bit easier for a beginner, because you can just use water as a medium/thinner instead of turpentine. There should be a section for each in the store. Buy some small tubes of basically whatever colors you want... if you plan on continuing to paint, you'd probably want to get a wide variety. Daler-Rowney and Windsor & Newton are good low-cost brands, around $5 a tube. For brushes, get at least three of different sizes. The people in the store will be able to help you get started. Once you have all the supplies, just lay out all your colors on a palette and go for it. You can buy disposable paper palettes at the art store... glass ones are a little more expensive, plus you have to clean them. Have fun. Don't get too stressed if you mess up... you can always let it dry and paint over it.
sketch your letters with a pencil lightly before you start, and listen to what they said ^. dont try and rush it, take your time and it will show
idk dude. If you're planning to just do this painting. With the letters. I would go for some cheap ass paint, like Tempura..or, hell. Even poster paint. Acrylic can be hella expensive- and although it'll look a wee bit cleaner and nicer if it's a small area of space you're planning on painting, there's nothing wrong with splurging. But for some reason i thought you wanted something..huuuge.
Yeah, but that kind of paint usually ends up looking cheap. I just figured since it was a gift and it was supposed to be something special and nice, the higher quality the better. Acrylic really isn't that expensive. You could probably get all the supplies except for the canvas for 20 or 30 bucks.
If you do end up getting tempura paint, plan on doing at least 3-4 coats of each color 2 coats of black
Acrylic paint isn't expensive. Go to Jo Ann Fabrics and they have small bottles for like $.75 to $1.00 a bottle. Sometimes even cheaper. And they don't look bad.
