Help with downstem size

    Wanted to upgrade my straight tube with this. My questions are:
    1. it says ground joint is 18mm and slide joint is 14mm.. i know it sounds kinda common sense but the ground joint is the joint that goes into the piece right?
    2, i also wanted to get a new bowl too while im at it..so if the slide joint is 14mm..would a 14.5MM bowl fit in it? i mean i doubt the .5mm would make a difference but i just want to make sure before i order.

    Ground joint is the hole where you put your downstem, slide joint is where you put the slide INTO the downstem. So yes, a 14.5mm bowl will fit it. Enjoy the new setup man, a showerhead does wonders for a tube.

    Thanks for clearing that up Maxy...but i gotta new problem. after going back and remeasuring my downstem, i saw that it is 3in. and not 3.5in. so the downstem upgrade is out of the question i guess beings i cant seem to find a diffused 3in. downstem anywhere, but i still want to get the new bowl. So beings i bought my tube at the LHS im not sure on the joint size, how can i measure to find this?

    Saying "18 mm ground joint" means that the diameter of the top of the ground joint it 18mm accross, so measure across the middle of the glass circle that is the ground joint.

    Im working on this too.

    There's 2 standards for "Ground Joints" (FYI short for Ground Glass Joint, including ANY Glass on Glass joint, not just the downstem joint, noting the technique they use to make them) US and ISO, seems the bongs are ISO std.

    The sizes are measured first by the diameter, then by the depth, so a 14/23 is 14.4 (specifically) mm wide by 23 mm in taper length.

    There's 4 sizes generally associated with glasswear: 9, 12, 14, 18, with the two most common being the 14 and 18.

    I'm still learning bout this too so if anyone has more specific info, thanks in advance.

    i think i understand now..it doesnt matter now anyway though since i cant find any diffused downstems short enough to fit my bong. the shortest that i can find is 3.5in and mine is 3in..
