Help with dosage

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by eli_420, Feb 2, 2022.

  1. Hello,
I've been making edibles for the last 6 months or so (in the form of brownies). I've read countless articles on how to figure out how many mg are in each brownie but the calculation never makes sense to me so I'm hoping someone can help out. Here's the details:
I typically use 10 grams (10,000 mg) of cannabis per batch
I grow my own weed and don't know the strain but I think it's safe estimate about 10% thc
I then decarb it and simmer it in butter, mix the in brownie batter and bake.
I then cut the brownies into 20 pieces
Based on this, that would mean there's ~1,000 mg thc in the brownies and ~50mg of thc per brownie. SO what I'm wondering and hoping someone can help me out with, is why does, say, a 10mg edible from a dispensary hit a lot harder than my ~50mg brownie? Am I doing a calculation wrong? Or does the cannabis used in dispensaries have other properties that I don't know of? Thank you for any help!

  2. I assume the 10,000 mg from 10 grams of cannabis is a misprint and you meant 1,000

There could be a number of problems from your extraction method (if you used one) to the temps used in processing and baking to the potency of the cannabis plant

I would start with my decarb process
Most problems seem to come from activating your cannabis for infusion
Maybe a little more detail about your method would help

Ever consider cold alcohol extraction for infusing your butter/ghee

You didn't go into detail about decarbing your buds. How did you decarb? That could be the difference, and of course the materials, was it trim or buds?

For rough figuring we use 15% for buds. So each gram is 150 milligrams of THC.
15 doses of 10 milligrams each.
    10 grams = 1500 mg of THC.
Divided by 20 brownies they should be 75mg each and blow your head clean off.

    Decarb 240 F for 40 minutes uncovered.
    Grind decarb buds to dust.

5 grams of Decarbed Kief or Hash or Powdered Buds
1 Tablespoon Coconut oil (Hits fastest)
1/2 teaspoon Lecithin ( strength enhancer)
    Combine
    Heat 220 F for 20 minutes
Freeze (softens and removes gritty texture)
    Heat 220 F for 20 minutes.
    Done.

For baking blend this finished high strength oil with the oil called for in your baked good and cook normally.

    5 Grams of Buds = 750mg THC
    5 grams Hash = 2500mg THC

    Buds 1 drop = 1mg THC
    Hash 1 drop = 3mg

I've used this recipe for the better part of a decade now and it just plain works better then anything I've come up against.

    3 tablespoons of Coconut oil
    2 teaspoons Lecithin
    [IMG]
15 grams of 160 micron dry ice Kief in each dish for a triple batch. Fills 90 single zero size capsules.

I've made thousands of these and they are a true 75mg and most people treat them as a 4way and take no more then a 1/4 of one at a time.
Perfect for my personal tolerance and need. Originally created for pain control the side effect is one hell of an intense stone.

  5. Isn't there 1000 mg per gram? I haven't considered cold alcohol extraction but would be interested in trying it. Do you have a recipe you like to use for it?
For my method, I grind the weed, spread it on a tray, decarb it at 240 F for 30 minutes, then simmer it in butter for 45 minutes and strain. I then use that butter in the brownies.
    Thanks for the response

  6. I just mentioned it in my last comment but for my method, I grind the weed, spread it on a tray, decarb it at 240 F for 30 minutes, then simmer it in butter for 45 minutes and strain. I then use that butter in the brownies. It sounds like I'm not considering the loss of thc in each step. And I usually use a mix of bud and trim but mostly bud.
    Thanks for the response

  7. Thank you for the detailed recipe- I'm excited to try it. A couple questions:
    - I've always ground the buds before decarbing. Do you find a significant difference with decarbing before grinding?
    - When cooking the bud and oils, do you typically just do it on stovetop and does 220 F come out to approximately a simmer?
    - I assume that after the second time you heat and you're done, you strain out the ground bud at that point?

Thank you again, I look forward to trying this out.

  8. Use your same method of decarbing except add 10 minutes just so your on the same page as the rest of us here
Make sure your oven is actually at 240f (115c) by using a couple of oven thermometers to calibrate your oven

Psychedelic Sam has a lot of info on the alcohol extraction in the threads that are pinned at the top of section
The threads are long but manageable
Brassnwoods thread will guide you through several options
You just stumbled on a gold mine of edible infusion

I was gulping infused coconut oil from the magical butter machine before I found this place
Now I'm using chocolate milk, soda, ice cream, sorbet and all kinds of other stuff just from learning cold alcohol extraction
Post in Psychedelic Sam's longer thread and he will explain cold alcohol extraction
Before you post make sure you have access to 190 proof alcohol or higher

  9. Makes no difference when you grind.
A simmer is likely hotter then a 220 F oven is but you can do it on a stove top.
This is a no strain whole herb recipe. You need so little and if in a capsule it has no real taste.
The Kief-Hash versions are tasty like a nut butter and I always let them melt in my mouth.

With buds you need about a 1/6 of a gram per dose.
    Kief-Hash is 0.1666666 grams for a 75mg hit or 0.0416666 for a 25mg dose.

With so little needed straining and the 25% losses incurred are just silly IME.

  10. There is 1000mg in a gram but there is only 100mg of THC in one gram of your 10% flower. For 10g that's 1000mg of THC in your 10,000mg total weight. 1000mg THC is the one you want to use and not the total weight.

You're infusing cocoa butter, aren't you? and not coconut oil? It can be infused with an alcohol tincture instead of a direct extraction with the cocoa butter. :)

  11. hey friend

here's a link to a really simple calculator that i often refer to, it will tell you doses per different methods of extraction, allow for decarb potency loss if selected, and can help you dose your edibles by how much of the concentrate is used and how many servings etc. I(this kinda sounds like an advert or scam hahah, apologies, i assure you its not!). It also helps because i'm not the best with numbers.
I can't be sure how accurate it is but it helps me a lot, especially in a country where pretty much all edibles are either "strong, alright/medium and weak" due to legislation/legality.

anyways, i should stop commenting high hahah, here's the link, hope it helps at least a bit :)
