help with blue lab meter

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by SteelersPens, Nov 14, 2012.

  1. So i just switched from a hanna combo pen to a blue lab combo meter( not the pen). And obviously its a bit a different. If anyone has this, can you tell me when you are reading the ppm 500 or 700 , is the number that shows means thats what the ppm is at or isthere some multiplying? Instructions talk about ec x 500 etc..so im confused by that. Also im not doing hydro..so i use the 500ppm reading correct?

I hope someone here has one of these lol

Stop using ppm. I must find where everyone learns this!

The ppm is a conversion from the electrical conductivity. It's a complete guess and one meter might use one kind of conversion while a different meter uses another kind of conversion. Then, talking about "I run Xppm of these nutrients" on a site leads some poor soul with a different meter to use the wrong nutrient strength.

Use the EC. Always. Only talk about EC. When other people talk about their ppm tell them that information is useless. What is important is the EC. My EC is your EC is everyone else's EC. It's standardized so that there is never confusion. Like now, where you are confused about how to read the ppm's. just read the EC and be done with it.

And if you're not doing hydro then why are you using a meter? Organic nutrients can be immeasurable by an EC meter because they are encapsulated by non-polar carbon molecules. They are not electrically conductive and cannot be measured. Also, the Organics should be regulating the pH as the weakly bonded organic acids can provide a misleadingly low pH reading when in the solution but they are rapidly broken down in the media.

  3. Well lets say i add some nutes in a bucket with only adding a bit of water...the ppms are thru the roof. I then add enough water to get it around 1200-1500. Thats why i measure the ppm. I understand every meter is different and you have to adjust to that certain one. Which is why im asking if anyone has experience with the blue lab i am using. By the way, the ppm 500 on this meter is tds..not ec. The ppm700 is ec.

Thats what combo meters r for

  4. I have a feeling you are a bit confused.

Bro, look at my rep bar. I know what combo meters are... TDS and PPM are the same thing. And they are both conversions from the EC.

The meter doesn't measure the ppm. It can't. What it does is run an electrical current through the water between two probes. If the electrical current is weak then the solution has a low Electrical Conductivity. If the current is strong then the solution has a high Electrical Conductivity. The manufacturer will create a solution of known ppm's by mixing salt into water and they measure the EC. Then they figure out how many ppm of salt they added and that gives them a conversion ratio.

But you don't mix up one salt, sodium and chloride. We use nitrogen, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium, iron, silicon, etc. Many different elements with varying levels of conductivity. This is why PPM measurements based on a conversion are a guess.

I don't know what you think the ppm is telling you that the EC is not. They are a measure of the same thing, the solution strength. Except the ppm is a total guess and is not as reliable or communicable as EC.

  5. Lol @ look at my rep bar.

Ok if im reading the ec...what should it be at?

  6. Nvm i got it..looked it up

  7. LMAO!! "Look at my rep bar!" My rep bar is as big as your rep bar... Mine is thicker too!! Problem is that rep on this site is a popularity contest. MOST people on this site with full rep got that rep by being witty or funny... NOT from grow knowledge. And if you been here long enough to get such a big rep penis then I am sure you know that.

So saying "Look at my rep bar" when trying to prove that you know what you are talking about does not help you or support you at all. It just sounds ridiculous.

There are some people on here with no rep and 4 posts that know more than most of the members here with full erect rep penises. Basically your rep bar is not a gauge used to signify your knowledge or experience in the growing world. It is merely a tool used by other tools on here to make one feel accepted into the "in" crowd.

  8. Wow. Talk about unnecessary and incorrect.

I pointed out my rep, largely gained assisting other growers in the coco and indoor forums, only as an indicator that perhaps I may know what I am talking about. Not my epenis.

Whatever though, I don't give two shits about what you think. You're still just mad after last baseball season. Go Giants!

  9. 800-1000ppm max in flower. 500-700ppm in veg, more if they need it.
