Help understanding Apollo fan schematic

Discussion in 'Grow Room Design/Setup' started by gumbygrow, Apr 6, 2018.

  1. I pulled the speed control cord from my 6 inch apollo fan and wired it to a 4 inch, I took a picture of the 4 inch so I could rewire it correctly, it works great no issues. When I did it I was just going to throw away the Apollo 6 inch because of a vibration, I have found another use for it and want to wire the cord that came off of the 4 inch but can't figure out what wires go to the capacitor. I have a 4 inch apollo I could look at but it is shoved so far up under a beam it would take some serious work to get to it. Thanks in advance. 20180105_161702.jpg

  2. Are you wiring a 2 wire or 3 wire plug on this unit and what voltage, I am not an electrician but have done some wiring. Take a picture of the wires you want to connect.

  3. 3 wire, 110v

one wire of the cap is attached to the neutral at least on the other fan and I am assuming the red motor wire. The green I assume is C for common it is attached to the blue motor wire. The black is hot, not sure what L stands for, live maybe, I have attached to the solid yellow motor wire. I have the yellow green attached to the other side of the cap. This how I have it now not sure if this is right. 20180406_062100.jpg

  4. To clarify I have 2 4 inch fans one is an apollo and impossible to look inside without pulling it off the wall and tearing out a bunch of other stuff. The other fan is a different brand I have a picture of it but the motor wires are all different colors from the apollo.

  5. Green is ground, L is for Load; the Black wire. Somtimes called HOT. N is neutral; the white wire.
According to your schematic the blue ties into the neutral; but I cannot confirm other that the photo.

  6. Motor wiring

    Yellow=Load= typical black
    Red/blue=neutral = typically white
    Yellow/green= ground= typical green

For 110v this is typical wire codes but a lot of plug ends don't have typical colours but the function is the same

A 110v male plug has 2 prongs and 1 is wider than the other this is typically the line.

Inside receptacles the screws are normally bronze and silver. The black is bronze the silver is common or N.

Again I am not an electrician but this is my understanding of some basic wire colours and functions.

  7. You are correct yellow-green is ground. The symbol that looks like an upside down T with the 2 hash marks is the ground symbol. The C is the capacitor the blue goes to the one side the red and neutral to the other.

The pic where I have it wired I have the blue and the yellow-green backwards.

I pulled the cover off the hydrofarm fan I know is right and could get to, hoping it had a schematic. It did, I compared them and it works. The bearings are still shot but it works. Thanks for the help.

In case anyone doesn't know the capacitor is like a little battery that stores a small charge to help start the motor under a heavy load. If you ever work with one make sure you don't touch both wires at the same time immediately after use or you will get a bit of a shock.
