HELP THE NOOB? HELP ME SORT OUT MY FIRST GROW?

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by Guahan89, Sep 13, 2020.

  1. Hello, first post and new member here — fingers crossed I didn’t break any rules with this thread.

A little about me — I’m new to growing anything, period. But, I’ve done a bit of research prior to pulling the trigger on starting my first grow.

I have my tent, light and exhaust fan set-up but I’m having issues with heat.

Can someone help me get this sorted?

I’ve looked at threads and tried hanging a fan in the tent but despite my efforts — the temp and humidity in the tent are outside the ideal range.

I’m currently just testing the tent so there’s nothing growing at the moment. I’d like to get better control of the temperature before I complicate my first grow knowing the environment is poor.

    For reference:

    Tent: 2x4x5’9 grow tent
    Light: Mars Hydro TSL 2000
Exhaust/CF: Mars Hydro 4in 200CFM fan and filter.

    Extra Cooling: 6” fan

Temps: 82-87 F with light on at full power
    Humidity: 29-32%

Ambient temperature is around 68-70 degrees F

    What should I try next?

  2. That's my temps right now and the plants love it. I have even gone into the high 90's/low 100s before with no issue. As long as the plants had air blowing on them.

  3. I just want to be able to manipulate the temperature a little more.

Being that my region is on the hotter side, would going up to a 6” exhaust fan help?

I feel like this 4” exhaust fan isn’t strong enough.

  4. I live in the hottest place in America! Luckily it is legal here. I quit worrying about rh. Rather have open air flow. So no tent for me. Just lots of fans IMG_20200912_073852_696.jpg

  5. Wow, nice bro.

Well, I can’t have my grow out in the open just yet. So, I’m forced to cultivate within certain parameters.

This is the second response that conflicts with the whole preferred temperature ranges thing —

  6. Most guys fight the whole thing when the try to get air flow and raise or lower the rh. A lot of guys say u must have certain rh to grow. Thats nonsense. Maybe they will grow a little better. But I germ outside in 115 deg heat and 20 rh. Go figure

  7. To me your temperature and humidity aren't really that bad. I grew some good bud with that. I finally got the temperature around 70-75 only by having my exhaust system hooked up right but my humidity never got above 70 and average from 29-50

  8. Yes if you have sufficient air you can do high temps

  9. What is your ambient temperature outside the tent? You really can't expect for your tent climate to be much different than what it is outside of it without being directly hooked up to an ac unit(as far as cooling goes) 82 is not too bad, but thats going to go up once plants fill in.

  10. humidity will raise as the plants grow and transpire more. I think I can start at around 30 but buy the end of flower it can be up to 70.

if you room temp is 68/70 that’s the minimum you can get theoretically.
Make sure you vent to a separate room. Don’t worry about the humidity but I would want lower temps.

  11. 6 inch fan for exhaust
And use your 4 inch fan to make an intake at the bottom
If you have a controller you can get both fans to work in sync so ther is just a small amount of negative pressure

  12. What about maximizing vpd? To have girls growing to their potential, it’s needed during veg. I try to stay as close to proper vpd as I can. Guahan89, research vpd and go by that to determine proper RH for your temperature. Also, ALWAYS have air on your girls. They should be dancing a little. You obviously don’t have to take my advice but look at my journal and you more then likely will.

  13. Man, thanks for all the responses!

I haven’t used a forum in years and I’m glad that the communities are still active on these things.

So, ambient temps are around 69-72.

At half tilt on the light, temps are much lower.

But, with the light cranked all the way on — which won’t be used till later in the grow... reads much higher.

About the humidity — I was thinking that the plants would generate some moisture but like I said this is my first grow.

So, I wasn’t sure if the plants themselves would raise that figure.

I’ll check out the journal referenced above and update today when I change out the exhaust fan.

  14. Plants will definitely raise the humidity as they get more leaves transpiring into your room. As others have said, I used to spend lots of time dialing in temp and rh. I still try and stay as close as possible to proper VPD. However, I don't worry about it too much as long as I keep good airflow on, under and around canopy. They are extremely resilient plants and will thrive in a wide variety of conditions.

  15. Thanks. I feel much more at ease.
