Help? Please?

  1. Uhh complete computer noob here, my speakers just sort of quit on me. Power still works and all but in sound and audio devices it says there is nothing hooked up.. I've been trying to find drivers for it as that's the only thing I've found could be wrong with it (according to google search :D)

I'm running XP, speakers are Koss HDM/111BK (According to what I see on the speakers themselves, no.. I don't have a manual or anything only the speakers.)

Help please? Whether it's telling me what might be wrong with them or help finding drivers for them.

Well, if Windows says there's nothing hooked up, you can completely rule out the speakers as being the problem. Kinda counter-intuitive, I know. But speakers are simple analog output devices, meaning they just work, and the computer has absolutely zero knowledge as to whether or not they're powered on, turned up, etc. So if they're physically connected to the right jack, Windows should notice it.

So let's start there: plugging into the right jack. Are you sure it's plugged into the right jack? It's usually a green one. :D

edit: XP, huh? Strange, XP doesn't have the sort of "plugged-in" and "not plugged-in" detection that Vista and Win7 have. Well, still, let's go along with this... plugged in to the green jack, right? :)
edit edit: I can also guarantee, there are NOT going to be any drivers for simple speakers. rofl. Maybe for the sound controller, but not the speakers themselves.

  3. Funny thing is, it was in a blue one for months and worked, and then suddenly isn't.
Tried green one and still says 'No audio device' in control panel>sounds and audio devices

    This is frustrating.

EDIT: Just remembered this happened a few days ago, I just restarted computer and it worked again. Not working anymore lol.

  4. There you go. "No audio device" means no audio controller, not "no speakers". Means it's not even detecting your audio controller, or it's malfunctioning.
(Great, just what I need tonight, too... audio drivers in XP are SUCH a bitch!)

Well, let's start here. Can you tell me the exact model of your PC? For example, "Dell Inspiron 1501"?

  5. Best i can do is Dell Dimension 9200

Does that sound right? its just whats on the pc itself.

    EDIT: I went to controlpanel>admin. tools>computer management>device manager

and it doesnt show any yellow ! or ? on any audio things..
not sure if that means anything

  6. Yep, that's the model. Funny, it looks like it's Windows 7 capable... why not upgrade to Win7 so you can make use of all your hardware? WinXP is holding back a computer that new...

Anywho, there are a few audio driver options available, depending on what you have in your computer. There's a driver for a Creative card, as well as one for the integrated audio.

Take a look here. Where are you plugging the speakers into, in this image?

  7. Guess what the fuck is suddenly working after restarting computer?

Yeah, i don't get win 7 because im sure my computer is screwed somehow. I mean, if my ethernet cable is disturbed it loses connection (due to shitty cable attacked by kittens that i havent replaced yet) but once i unplug and plug it back in it would work again right? Not anymore... i have to completely restart my computer to get internet back. (Which just happened to me and upon startup sound speakers worked...)

Any idea of what could be wrong now? And thanks so much man.. ill be sure to rep you when i get positive rep.

  8. GODDAMNIT.

*WHILE LISTENING TO MUSIC* Click on youtube video... NO FUCKING SOUND.

Check control panel.. NO FUCKING AUDIO DEVICE.

I'm reeeeeaaaallly starting to get pissed off.. might just go live as a shut-in and throw away all electronics.

  9. Well, sounds like you've got a shitload'a problems... for one thing, Ethernet cables grow on trees, can probably scrounge through a trash can and find one that hasn't been eaten by kittens :p Or just ask your company IT guy, probably got a hundred of them in a box in the server room just laying around.

OK, so I don't know what you mean by "sure your computer's screwed somehow". If you install Win7 it's a whole clean new computer... Windows is your operating system, not just another program you install. So it'd probably do you a lot of good! I'd recommend investing the $100 in the Win7 upgrade if you can squeeze it in.

As to the sound issue, I still need to know where you've got the speakers plugged in, per the image posted above... I can provide you with a driver download but I need to know which one to give you :p

  10. Reinstall the driver for your sound card and make sure everything is plugged in properly. That's all there is to it.

  11. That's what I'm trying to do, if he'd answer my question I can point to the right driver.

  12. Yes i said it was plugged in the right one wayyy up haha.

    Thanks guys.

I've figured out that the only sound that works is itunes and regular computer sounds (notifications, startup, shutdown, that stuff)

Anything else doesn't work... like internet/counter strike (love this game)

EDIT: It says my driver is 'Sigmatel High Defenition Audio CODEC'
    If that helps.

  13. ... Oh? *goes through thread* Where?

    Yep, that helps.
    Drivers and Downloads
    Direct download: http://ftp.us.dell.com/audio/R124105.EXE

Download, install. If that fails, let me know, I'll probably just have to remote-assist your computer and that way I can clean up that and any other issues that are bugging you... :p

Had to make sure i wasn't just baked lol

K will try, I kind of want it to not work so you can remote assist because it sounds cool

What is a generic host process for Win32 services error?
Pops up most times i start computer

Yes, but that didn't say which blue/green jack you plugged it into, where it was in reference to the pic like I asked. :smoke:

Anywho, yeah, try that, let me know. I'd also love to help out but I'm getting a headache trying to juggle S1G1 and S1G2 sockets... ugh, fucking AMD.

  16. Yup it worked, only thing bugging me now is the damned generic host thing.

Whatever, hopefully after the new drums i can find money for win 7

  17. Yay!

The generic host thing is exactly what it says: a generic host process for "SOMETHING" malfunctioning. No way to know what it is unless you've got a tech poking through your computer using tools to figure it out. I'd just recommend "Send report" every time you get it, always gives me a warm fuzzy to give a middle-finger to whoever's causing the error... if MS gets enough of them, they'll work to find a solution. And I've seen that before, and I think it was related to some old nVidia driver. Pretty safe to ignore in that case.

  18. Just went on youtube... guess what happened?

    'No audio device'

  19. Augh. Alright, sounds like a bigger problem.

    PM'ing.

  20. Youthere Falcon? I don't know if my PM's are being sent or not.
