Yes you can if you run a HPS which is the same ballast with an added starter required for the HPS,you can also run the MH but the only rule is you must run the same wattage.
Fixtures are mostly interchangable,its the ballast which MUST have a starter for the HPS,MH bulbs dont need the starter,so when shopping for any ballast make sure it will work with a HPS and your golden,some do have switches if they are not "E" ballasts to turn off the starter for MHs.
