So I just got my tax return back today so I'm looking to buy an HPS setup. I'm looking on ebay cause the prices are around what I'm looking for. I'm just looking for 400w light. I have a couple that I'm watching but I'm really torn on which one to get. I want one that will hopefully last awhile so I won't have to replace it anytime soon. These are the ones I'm currently looking at: This one doesn't look bad but the seller doesn't list the brand, which has me a little worried. 400 WATT 400w MH+HPS DIGITAL GROW LIGHT HOOD SUN SYSTEM - eBay (item 230580914611 end time Feb-08-11 11:15:20 PST) I also like this one because it is from a company that I could research and that people have heard of before and they seem to be reliable with their products. The only thing I don't like about it is the fact that I would need to buy a MH conversion bulb because of the ballast. 400 WATT HPS GROW LIGHT SYSTEM 400W XL SUN LAMP sodium - eBay (item 400167409577 end time Feb-22-11 18:14:27 PST) I'm trying stick around the price of $170 shipped. If you guys can help me out with possibly which one I should get in terms of reliability and price. Or if you guys could point me to another place to possibly get them for that price.
Saw city of trees in your signature if by any chance your in or close to Sacramento which is sometimes refered to as the city of trees check out Good Nature Garden Supply. I walked out with a used 1000 watt Tek ballast, Radiant 6" air cooled hood and a cheap 1000 watt MH bulb for $357.00 rounded off. A good name brand 400 watt set up would cost less then what I paid but you would be getting better products. It would most likely cost you a little more but to me I dont trust cheap no name electronics or stuff that doesnt look like it has much in the line of quality craftsmanship which is why when I was looking into buying a light setup I walked away from Ebay and the cheaper HTG light set ups. http://goodhydro.com/
Honestly, if you have the room and way to vent the hot air, i would go with a 1000 watt HPS. (Invest that tax return!! lol)
If going that route I would defintely get a digital dimmable ballast. The Digital ballasts are more efficient on electricity then magnetic ballasts are and the 600 watt digital ballasts are the most efficient for lumens generated per watt of electricity used.
When buying a ballast online I would suggest a brand name ballast that if you have any issues you can take back to a local store for warranty. I had that 400 from HTG and when it stopped working I was going to have to send it back to them and wait for them to decide if it was a warranty and then send it back to me, when it stopped working the second time I got a brand name ballast and have had no issues.
It also depends on how much you want to spend...in lighting especially a few extra bucks up front will save you much headache down the road.
Thanks for the responses you guys! From the responses I'm kinda scared to try the HTG Supply lights/ballasts. I have heard some good things about them on some threads throughout Grasscity, but I'm still kinda iffy about it. So now I'm trying to find an actual Sun Systems setup. So I found this on now, what do you guys think? 400 Watt HPS/MH Sun System Grow Light W/ Both Bulbs!! - eBay (item 280618279658 end time Feb-17-11 18:47:34 PST) Help again would be appreciated!!!
That light setup has a built in ballast which means it gonna run hotter which in turn is gonna increase the heat more in your grow area. Theres alot to take into consideration when putting together a grow set up. Like what are you gonna be growing in will help determine the size of the light hood you will need and how its gonna be vented is also something to consider, exhausting hot air out and bringing cool fresh air in. Air cooled hoods have one advantage and thats with a small exhaust fan you can exhaust alot of the heat from the light up and out of the grow area especialy if growing in a tent, closet or enclosed small grow room.
Okay, so I went ahead and got the one with the built in ballast. I live on the east coast and right now my temps in my grow room are very low. Hovering around 59-62 degrees. My grow room is a closet in a bedroom in the downstairs apartment of my house. The room has no sort of heat so it does stay pretty cold down there. I wanted to go with the one by Sun System simply because I know it is a good brand and it was also in my price range. I'm hoping it will bring my temps up in the room but not to the point where they are going to be fried. I plan on in the future getting a grow tent so I can easily move my plants when need be. I think it should be easier to vent the heat out of that as compared to my current closet. The room also has a window that I can vent out and/or bring fresh air in. The closet isnt huge by anymeans but the room that it's in is pretty big so I'm hoping the heat will be dispersed in some way. I'm hoping I made the right choice but I'm quite excited to start using a big boy light instead of all these little CFLs >.< well it should be here some time next week, that along with my weed star double bubble that is coming. Next week should be exciting to say the least.
It depends upon you how much heat you want.I would suggest you brand name CLEAVE-A shop. All CLEV-A products undergo stringent quality tests to ensure the highest possible quality of product.I think you should try it.
