HELP!!! First Grow with major Heat issues

Discussion in 'Micro Grows' started by weeker808, Jan 10, 2013.

  1. Hello All! So this is my first attempt at growing and I gotta say, im hooked already! I decided to turn my ikea bed side table (about 22"x18"x24") into a micro growbox. I have 4x24W cfls for now but am wanting to take it up to at least 6. The main problem Im running into right now though is heat. With my back door on and my little exhaust fan (23 cfm) running my temps get over 95. I've already fried two babies in that heat so I ordered an 88 cfm fan to replace it. Hopefully this will be powerful enough to create negative pressure. I also have a small oscilating fan to help move air and 4x3/4" passive intakes at the bottom. The box is in a 72-75 degree room. Can anyone tell me why Im getting such crazy heat and how I can handle it while still maintaining my stealth factor?

  2. Your exhaust fan in a pc fan..
Are you attempting to use a pc fan to push through a carbon filter?

If you are, it is probably not pushing through, and the hot air is not escaping the small grow area.
Also, until you sort out your ventilation problem, the fan inside is just blowing hot air around.

  3. I use this computer fan to exhaust my grow box. It's a 156 cfm fan and is completely silent (like 21 dB). It also has pretty good static pressure due to the design of the fan blade so it will not have a problem creating negative pressure. Best part is, it only cost around $20 new.

  4. ive had some decent results with pc fans pushing through a carbon filter.
I used 2 cheap 120mm fans like this
I mounted them in series, so one directly in front of the other. and they seem to be pushing through a filter fine. the airflow has slowed down lightly, but temps haven't gone up considerably.

All you need is some increased airflow, so invest in some more beefy fans. in a small box like that, i think an expensive duct fan is overkill.

  5. I don't have my carbon filter hooked up to my exhaust fan because i knew it would only make things worse. My plan was to move my small fan to my filter once the bigger one came in but now im thinking im going to get that 150+ cfm fan for exhaust and use the 88cfm to pull air through the filter.

I've also read that my passive exhaust should be twice as big as the exhaust opening.is this correct? is 4x3/4" intake holes enough?

Thank you all for your help. You guys are awesome!

  6. Anyone have any input on my passive intake question?
