Help! Deficiency question in DWC

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by andymcballer, May 16, 2021.

  1. Hey all.
Need some help. I'm thinking this is a CA deficiency possibly both cal mag def. So here's the details. First put gg4 clones in DWC buckets on April 23rd. The first roots touched the water about 10 to 12 days later. Everything's been excellent until I came home from work yesterday and notice these spots!!!

So here's the info y'all will need to help determine.

RO water with the FF nutrients.
Air temp is between 68 at night 75 during day the water temp is 69 to 71.
Ph is checked daily and I set it to 5.8 and then 3 or 4 days later when it's at 6.1 I bring it back down to 5.8. led lights.ppm around 350 using only RO water + grow big+ hydroguard+super thrive. The day before this happened I added liquid big bloom (not a flowering nutrient) any ideas? Just flushed and added cal mag yesterday when I saw the spots.hopefully that's it.side question has anyone ever added cal mag and had their dwc bubble up? Not small fine bubbles like foam. But like I put dish soap in it. Which just to stop anyone from asking dish soap has never been anywhere near the buckets or plants. And the bubbling happened before flush and after flush only when adding the calmag. Any answers would be amazing!!!

    Thanks

    Andy

Ps I'll upload more pics with regular light later. IMG_20210515_163021.jpg IMG_20210515_163045.jpg

  2. Not under the purple light . But i can tell you . There is heat stress in the second picture . Raise the light a bit will correct the stress. Snap pics under white light .

Your PPM meter is pretty much worthless . it tells you what your total parts per million is ,but not which minerals or nutrients are to hi or low .

To know which minerals or nutrients are not enough or to much you need a nutrient photometer and about 300.00 in reagents .
Only other way is to learn the tell tale signs that plant shows in its leaf stem and roots when it gets sick .

    Hope the links help

  4. Or post pics with white light so we can see them.
Anybody that can diag plants with the blurple lights is guessing .
No need to drop 900 dollars on a test unit for a personal grow .

  5. When I get home from work I'll post pics in regular light. What's weird is to the eye the light isn't blurple. But on camera it comes out that way.

  6. Does anyone have an ideas why the calmag would bubble my water up. And again I tried it before and after a flush and it bubbled up both ways. And when I tried it after the flush I made sure it was the first thing I put in. So I poured calmag into RO water and it bubbled up like dish soap. Any ideas??

  7. Yes. Is your calmag made for hydro ?
I know what i use will make the water cloudy in a few days like a bunch of micro bugs . So i have to add it asap .

  8. Here's better pics. They looked like they had more spots today. Can't be sure though. Here are some better pics. Looks like one hasn't really been affected. They are all clones and I run virtually identical setups in each bucket when it comes to water and nutes. When I got home today the pH had shot up to 7.3 so I brought it back down. The spots are forever right? Even if I cure the deficiency, the leaves that had spots will always have spots right, just need growth will be clean.. which it looks like the new growth coming out is unaffected.

Also P.S. someone said heat so I raised my led light from less than 12" away to closer to 24"

  9. Foam in res makes me think you have rot going on.

from your most recent pics, some fans look starved and others look like too much N. so even light burn could be a factor.

Then you Do have a cal mag issue with those rust spots......

for being so young idk why you have a complex soup for these girls, if I was you I’d only be using cal mag and your veg nute till your closer to flower

  10. Yes i would like to see a picture of the roots as well. Are they white ?
I want to say yes potassium locked from the high ph . But not without all the info needed .
If the roots have rot it does not matter how much your feeding .

Look at the sixth picture in this post .
Edit the heat stress i was seeing is now gone .

  11. I'll take a picture of the roots. There's no slime on the roots and no smell. They look pretty white to me. But I think the liquid big bloom which is brown in color stained them a little.

Shouldn't the hydroguard protect the roots? And also water temp never changes from the 68 to 71 degree range.

Let me ask another question. Let's say it was cal mag issue. How long after I correct it should I expect it to clear up? And the spots will never disappear right? I just shouldn't see any new leaves get spotted? Correct?

  12. Also I'll try and take a picture. It's not foam like foam on a beer. It's bubbles like out of a kids bubble blower thing. The air bubbles come out of the water and hold their shape becoming stacked bubbles 2" big or so. I put some peroxide in just in case it's any root Rot issue but I don't think it is. But I will def take your advic and cut my soup ingredients down to grow big and calmag

  13. Btw the last few pics I posted were of the same leaf. It was the strongest example I could find. There aren't any other leaves on any other plants that look as bad as that one. Most are spotted just along the edges. So hopefully I caught it soon enough.

  14. Bro, this is all I know and not saying this mean with the start lol.
Anyway, you should never have bubbles that hold shape and form a stack, the bubble column should look exactly like a pot of boiling water......

Since you do have bubbles, this is what I would do...... drain and clean res/bucket or what ever. Rinse well.....

make soup for plant, using no more than grow, cal mag, hydro guard........ one ml of cal mag per gal no more than that! Cal mag is heavy in N and will mess up the base ppm of the grow. Then add 2ml or more of hydro guard per gal. I personally do only two rounds of hydro guard, and that’s when roots are truly established in the res meaning a good fist full, and then at flower..... I usually do 3ml of hydro guard per gal and I never have foam. Also mix nutes in that order.....

real talk, I only ever really do cal mag at .25 per gal unless I have one that’s hooked on it like crack...... and usually I do it ever other res change

  15. No no no. I appreciate your advice. This is the thing though that is crazy so when this first happened. I dumped all the water flushed the plants. Cleaned the buckets. And put RO water in and nothing but one tsp of calmag. And it bubbled up. Without even touching the plants. Like the second the calmag hit the water it bubbled. THAT is what confused me.

Thanks for the recipe. This is what I used. I used 3 tblspn (total not per gallon)grow big hydroguard at 2ml per gallon and that's about it. Then the day before this happened I added a few tablespoons of liquid big bloom. Which is just earthworm castings and bat guano..and super thrive at a 1/4tsp per gal which is just b vitamins and hormones and not npk content

  16. I will post roots pics after work today and update with any new symptoms.

  17. Oh no. My roots went from white to brown in 2 days. Now the air stones are covered in brown stuff. Roots aren't slimy or smelly. But they are not white anymore. Please what can I do I'm so bummed. Don't tell me I have to start over. Peroxide? First 2 pics are the worst affected. Then 1 pic of each other plant. Last plant still looks mostly white..but with a hue of tan. Doesn't come through in photos. I'm gonna flush. Clean buckets. Then what strong dose of hydroguard?
