HELP Cant tell if Im over or underwatering

Discussion in 'Micro Grows' started by Protestthegrow, Feb 27, 2016.

  1. I've been stuck for a few days wondering if I'm overwatering or underwatering and so far I think I've over watered, or maybe my pot doesn't drain enough/well enough? The leaves kind of feel like a fake plant. The stems aren't sagging with the leaves very much. Any input or solutions very appreciated![IMG]

  2. Looks like over watering, sort out your drainage then you can also water it only when the soil is dried up, don't be afraid about the plant not getting water it can survive without water for a bit so just water it when soil is dry feel every day by the size of your plant I'd water it every two days or so depending on the temperature i had this problem a lot and killed many plants im paranoid so want to water it every time i see it but don't worry.

  3. It helps beginners to buy a cheap moister meter...
About $10 bucks at a Box Store...

    Something like this:
I like the two prong ones
This one was eleven bucks on Amazon

  4. KillerNews, thanks for the input, I added more, larger holes to the bottom of the pot and I've helped my temp a little by installing the fan in the side of the cabinet. I have watered today and I probably won't until tomorrow night, if not later. Thanks for the suggestions Groot, I heard about getting one of those from an experienced family member. I'll definitely be getting a moisture meter today. [IMG]

    .....

You don't ALWAYS use the meter...
But even after growing several seasons... It's still a handy tool to have...

Try "picking up the pot" method on an outdoors grow...planted in a hillside ...Hmmm
Or having rain mess up your timely schedule...
Just how wet did it get..... AT THE ROOTS...
    I like tools...
They make life easier... or bend it in your favor

  6. What light are you using? And how much total actual watts?

  7. I'm using 6-8 CFLs
    3 - 23w 1620 Lumen (2700k) CFLs
    3 - 23w 1250 Lumens (5000k) CFLs

    And when it's not too hot I accent with 2 - 13w 900 Lumen 5000k CFLs

I've had a big heat issue with this cabinet, I have a 4 inch inline exhaust fan pulling the hot air near the bulbs out and 2 12v 3 inch fans pushing cold air in but I still have to leave the door open with a 24" box fan pushing cool air from the window across the room in. Current temp in the box is 83 at top, 81 root fall.

  9. If you've not allowed the container the plant is in to completely dry out between waterings, you've been over-watering. The container should feel as dry as it did when you loaded it with fresh dry soil for your clone/seedling. The soil you're using looks too heavy. It could use a nice healthy dose of perlite added in with it. These plants need defined wet/dry cycles to be healthy. They like arid light soil with very good drainage. Read in the new grower threads here on the forum for the basics needed to grow these plants easily. TWW

  10. Thanks TWW for the input, I hadn't really thought about it that way, I'll definitely check that out and allow the soil to totally dry out between watering. I'm using Fox Farm Ocean Forest, to my knowledge one of the best moisture holding soil, so I should definitely back off a bit. How much perlite would you recommend for an 8 inch pot? Or better yet how much would you say I should add when transplanting to a 12 inch pot?

1 to 1 would be good to start with I would think add more or less the more you add the quicker it would dry out.

  12. I understand the heat issue i just started growing under one 160w cfl but heat is a killer issue i have two fans out and one for air in but i leave the door open all day lowest temperature i get while lights on its 28c hottest would be 33c but my Plant is only on day 3 today so it's close to the light and that means it gets the heat haha which is always under 30c or 30c on the dot i usually spray it with cool most from time to time i guess it helps some way.

  13. Yeah I'm having trouble in the same range of temperature, 84-90 unless I keep the door open all day. The room the grow cab is in is about 68-70f during the day, I leave a fan in the window across the room to cool it down

Plants do not need defined wet and dry periods. They just don't need constant water logged soil that restricts oxygen to the roots. If they needed defined wet and dry periods hydro would be impossible and keeping a good organic soil lightly moist would also fail. Sub irrigated planters would also be another fail for both organic and bottled fed plants. Organic soils should stay lightly moist as not to damage the micro organisms. Only none of that is a fail. The problem arises when the soil is kept too wet for too long.

  17. Killset, thanks bro I didn't know that, I'm gonna get a moisture meter and try to keep my soil at a good moisture level constantly. How can I come back from this overwatering better? It's taken a few days so far. [IMG]

  18. Lot of great info in this thread, thanks for sharing everyone who has contributed. Very useful info :)

  19. One more thing, when I do water again how much should I give her? I'm thinking 1 1/2 to 2 cups maybe

  20. Water her until you get a little bit of run off water then stop, wait till dry and repeat.
