Heart Disease and Weed? (Long QT)

Discussion in 'General' started by Evilpig, Feb 20, 2007.

  1. My younger brother has heart disease (long qt syndrome) and it's in the family. Luckily for me I don't have it.

But my mom, and her mom both died a sudden death because of it which scares me. My sister and my aunts family also have it.

Anyways, my brother has recently been experimenting with pot. And I worry because who knows what will happen.

I was just wondering if anyone has any information about this because if it is dangerous I want him to stop. The disease has taken it's toll on my family and I do not want anything else to happen.

    Thanks ;)

  2. Long QT is a red-flag for Sudden Cardiac Death, and is a very serious inherited disease. How are they going to be treating him? Anti-arrhythmias or pace-maker/difibrullator? Either way, you should probably have him talk to the doctors, and listen to what they tell him.

People have died while smoking weed, and one person has died while doing coke... This information taken from:

    Or there's this:

  3. Thanks for the info man. I really appreciate it. +rep

I mean. If it is healthy I'd love for him to smoke. It would be fun to chill, but it's his health I worry about more than anything.

  4. I doubt he'll be able to smoke MJ without at least running the risk of developing fatal tachyarrhythmias. Fatal heart arrhythmias are your brothers biggest risk with his disease... MJ has affects on your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, which are the main controls of your hearts natural rhythms. Increased sympathetic tone = increased heart-rate; increased parasympathetic tone = slower heart-rate. Both cause arrhythmias, and while they're not typically fatal, they CAN be in a person who is already predisposed to developing a fatal arrhythmia from a genetic disorder such as Long QT syndrome...

  5. Your bro ever talk to his doctor to see what would happen if he were to smoke? Depending on the severity of his condition/how they're treating him, he may or may not be able to blaze. He should definitely talk to the Dr. though.

  6. Yeah. I should tell him to do that.

    The doc should know all.

    Thanks for your concern man.

  7. i'm of the philosophy that we are all going to die anyway, so party while you can. talking to the doctor is best, but i'm the type of person that would say fuck it, and do it anyway. it's just good to know the risk involved.

  8. also its a little different...if you think well ima die one day so enjoy thats fine, but if you have a condition where if you do something specific you know it puts you at a great risk for death or serious harm, then doing that 1 thing anyways seems kind of stupid. Like, if you have problems with your liver...and you go on a drinking binge cause of your philosophy, then i think thats retarded lol cause normally you'd die some time far in the future but now your just asking for trouble.

we are all going to die anyways, so lets all run in front of buses

anyways evil, i would suggest asking a doctor, it would be nice to talk to someone with experience and not rely on what you find on the internet, cause you know how that goes, alot of false information and propaganda on both sides. Hope it works out for your bro man, glad u dont have it tho

  9. hey man, if you get enjoyment out of running out in front of busses go for it.

  10. No prob :)

I have a pretty healthy amount of heart problems in my family, so I know how it can be. I, myself, have some pretty nasty problems with my heart's electrical system. It's kinda beat, but oh well.

Hope it works out so your bro can toke. It sucks not being able to do things 'cause of medical reasons.

  11. Yeah. I might not show it, but I worry about him every day.

He's young, and getting himself into the kinds of things I did, but his heart condition is always worrying me.

  12. You should buy him a vaporizer, assuming it's ok with the doc.

  13. It's the high that is dangerous.

  14. It's the THC that could possibly be dangerous for him. It affects the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems (the 2 parts of your autonomic nervous system, which control ALL of your bodies automated functions - including your heart)... Because THC affects these systems, it can possibly cause his brother's heart to have a fatal arrhythmia (because of the electrical vulnerability that occurs during Long QT Syndrome).

Your bro's not experimenting with Coke, Meth, MDMA, or other any other stimulants, is he? If so, he's really putting himself at risk. He shouldn't even have caffeine in his diet, really.

  15. I'm bumping an old thread.

I was searching for 'Long QT' and 'MDMA' on google and found my original thread. Weird.

But wow.... Keeping him away from weed didn't work. Now he is doing E (not sure how often because he lies to me about his drug usage now). Not only is he doing E he is fucking selling it too.

I'm starting to get worried. He obviously isn't listening to me and I don't know what to do anymore.

(Keep in mind, he is almost 16, I'm 20. Still living at home with him and my dad

Anyone have any suggestions for me? Or information on the issue?

  16. if it chills him then id say its good but the hot smoke could be very bad. vape maybe?
my family has a long history of heart attacks and shit and i get bad panic attacks where i feel near death. the doc's answer to that? get me hooked on two damn inhalers(things only got worse from then on)
but all the best to you, your bro and your family.
