Hey everybody I got a hydrofarm grow light 400 watt high pressure sodium s51 that I'm borrowing from my buddys dad well everythings been running pretty smoothly until tonight. I got home and saw that there was no light and when I went in for further inspection it seems like it's trying to warm up but can't I'm not exactly sure it's hard to explain anyway I'm really worried because 1. It's not mine 2. It's going to cost a fortune to fix if there is a problem. So please anyone with info or knows anything about these lights help thanks.
hey man im not a expert but ill try to help. when my light is starting up or has just shut off and turned back on right away it tends to have a light orange glow for a few minutes. afterwards it pops right on. if yours isnt coming on at all, it could be a issue with the bulb. they are not that expensive to replace. (it is probabally a bulb issue) worst case scenario it coulf be the ballast and that may cost you a few bucks.
Thanks bro it still hasn't fully turned on I decided to turn it off and let it cool over night then try my luck tomorrow if the problem continues from there I'll take it to the store thanks again
Make sure the bulb is firmly screwed in all the way into the socket. Could be a bad connection. I'd also replace the bulb first, do you have any spares?
I just experienced this and freaked out it was just glowing a little bit and wouldnt come on much at all. I found out that when you turn the light off it is impossible to get it to immeadiatly start up again. Not to sure about the science behind it probably a safety thing. Unplug it wait a minute and plug it back in, hope you didnt keep it on like that for too long.
Probably a bad ignitor or bad capacitor. Both replacement ignitors and capictors are available through hydrofarm as well as electrical distributors. relatively easy to replace as there are only a few components in a hid ballast. make sure you get 400 watt replacement parts. Much cheaper than getting a new ballast
Did you just quote yourself to make it seem like someone came into the thread to agree with you? Epic self-promotion. Masturbation much. Before you dig into your ballast it's probably under warranty for one, and you should always try a new bulb before saying the ballast is bad.
No 2lazy just was too lazy to go back and edit my post after having a another thought on it. Sure it could be a bad bulb although, wouldv'e assumed that was checked first. If it is the bulb ----great. If not, my money is on the ignitor
