Having problems growing afghani

Discussion in 'Advanced Growing Techniques' started by hydrojim, Feb 5, 2010.

  1. I bought some afghan seeds and have had no luck growing them. I've never had a problem with any other strain. If someone has some luck growing this strain let me know what you're doing. Mine grow but are spinally.

Im growing afghani goo at the moment.

Its a beautiful plant and I cant wait to try its smoke. The leaves are all very "sharp" and serrated giving it a feeling of something both elegant and menacing.

For all I know Afghani could be a tough grow during its seedling stage because I grew mine from a clone which I got from a dispensary so I know I got a plant professionally handled from a healthy mother, that helps.

Anyways, after a week of sitting in a rockwool cube (I went out and bought all the necessary gear) I transplanted her into a pot with "Oregonism" Endo/Ecto Mychorhizae mixed in with FFOF soil, the bottom of the pot was netted, I think it was meant for hydro but I got it because it looked to provide good aeration, which it did--I would recommend it. I put her under a 400W MH and gave her a heat mat to sit on. Apart from that I pretty much have gotten lucky with her. I put her through a drought, didn't check pH once, the lamp fell on her one time, dropped her myself, started chopping off her calaxcys once they swelled up (lol they looked like balls and the stickies here didn't really help) and put her into a 9 hour light cycle for 6 days (this is my first grow if you hadn't noticed) and she is doing just fine.

I have noticed that she is susceptible to heat, pests, and mold (moreso than all my other plants) so she probably comes from a "touchy" lineage. I dont know how you are growing her, but I would germinate her however u like (paper towels for me) then when shes sprouted put her in an "airy" pot with FFOF and some probiotics. Keep her at the right temperature at all times and give her enough light. You should be OK;)

    hope this helped

  3. af. goo loves organic soilless mix #4 with extra calcium and magnesium. Try a endo/ecto with added tricoderma in it, something like great white roots. hope this helps.

  4. the goo is a killer smoke too very devestating.

  5. glad to hear it I can already tell...

  6. Well, if it's an original, stable, afghani strain, then it will grow a bit slower than a F1 hybrid will. The older, inbred strains just do that. Pest and mold resistance will be lower too.

But, Afghani's should be pretty bushy in general. How long you been growing them out? Pics always help too.

  7. She started out fine but about 3 weeks into flowering she (leaves) started getting thin. Then it got cold as hell and she went down hill. My other plants kept right on growing fine - even thru the cold spell(2 1/2 weeks) down to 30 degrees in my flower room. My Thai kept growing fine nice budz. I just harvested my babies and got and average oz a plant excepte for afghan - 1/4 oz. I think I'll forget afghan for now and try it again in the spring.

  8. 30 farenheit? Gonna need some heating with that kind of temp drop. I'd be glad you got a decent harvest out of any of them.
