I've been playing since civ 3 was a few years old, so I've probably drained weeks worth of hours on this series. anyone else play?
I've probably wasted more of my life playing Civ 2 than any other game. It's been a few years since I played Civ 3, but that was pretty good too. Right now it's all about #4 though, that game kicks all kinds of ass. There are tons of awesome mods as well that greatly increase the replay value. I bought 5 when it came out last September and was pretty disappointed. It was fun for a bit but after a few weeks the shine really wore off and I haven't touched it since like October. I won't bother ranting about it though.
Been on the Civ wagon since it started on the Amiga way back when Greatest strategy franchise in the history of computer gaming. Though I think it started as a board game from Avalon Hill (long time since I played that, mid 90's perhaps), who also have the excellent Advanced Squad Leader board game that the Close Combat computer games are loosely based on. Another great franchise. If you haven't tried Close Combat, especially the third in the series, you've lost out on some excellent RTS fun. Currently on Civ5 naturally. Great fun, but I find it a bit hard to get to grips with. The combat system, with one unit per tile, kind of defeat my previous tactic of megastacks annihilating everything in their path. Now I got to think again, and be carefull with my unit dispositions.
Civ 4 took many hours of my life, now playing Civ 5. I'm liking it, but it doesn't seem as addicting as previous Civs. Not sure why, maybe I'm burnt out on it. Ramses II in Civ 5 is dominating IMO.
I've been trying to play Civ 5. I like it, it just runs slow as shit on my comp, especially on big maps. Been playing custom with the World Map on huge, it is awesome. If you do it though, make sure you a start in Asia or you get fucked on resources.
I first started playing Civ 2 back in middle school. Since then the Civilization series it probably tied with Roller Coaster Tycoon for most time of my life wasted. Civ 4 was the best imo, but the hex grid in 5 makes so much more sense.
I'm playing Civ Revolution on my 360 right now. I've played games like this before, but I'm pretty sure this is my first Civ game. I was thinking of getting one for my laptop so i can play at work. I'm reading up about them all right now.
Another amiga player here =) I have both civ 4 and 5 installed on my laptop, I bought 5 and never uninstalled 4 so i still play it occasionally. I like the new hex system, but never got into the mass stacks of military so i don't have to change play style. I have problems understanding why people keep saying they have to change their play style - I end up with my cities covering major map area, instead of restricting to 3 or 4 cities. I do diplomatic and tech victories. Ever play Caesar and Pyramids?
I always turn every victory except domination off, makes the games last longer and you can play past 2250 or whatever the cutoff point is. I like the new hex style too, it makes a lot more sense when your borders are expanding. The problem with the stacking vs. single unit per square is when you are attacking a territory, you have to now individually move each unit. Whereas with stacking, you could just make a shitload of units, have them all on one square, move in and obliterate all. But since you do diplomatic and tech victories I can see how that doesn't affect your strategy. It's kind of a pain in the ass for me now. I will say it makes you have to be a little bit more strategic about how you are going to attack. I've been left open to attack because I didn't have my border secure on several occasions.
Anybody who 'specializes' in a specific game can sound elitist. I spend more time playing EVE Online, but you probably wouldn't know until I mention it. I play everything for PC from solitaire to WOW to EVE Online to bejeweled 2 =)
Anyone else notice that resources suck on the Civ 5: cradle of civ: americas maps? If I'm remembering right, iron is nowhere to be found. Also, need to add, I really like the Hex system, and ranged combat, but turn times are too long with huge maps. And I have a pretty decent system. meh, what are ya gonna do? Oh yeah, Civ 5 needs a world builder!
YES Man, resources are a PAIN IN THE ASS on Civ 5. I pretty much just go out and dominate everyone around me right off the bat because of it. I have a huge empire right now, but I am still lacking iron. It's ridic. Sure, I can build all the nukes I want, but I can't build a fucking tank because of iron.
I think you need a pretty solid rig to run Civ 4. for a laptop, it probably should be pretty cutting edge on the video and cpu front.
