Hello everybody, I am eager to start a grow with my 5 year old. We will probably grow cherry tomatos. I am here to document the journey as well seek/offer advice. I am going to put a plant or two on the deck and hope it gets enough sun and animals don't get it and we will get tomato's. I am also hoping to plant one indoors. I am looking into LED fixtures; I haven't been on the scene in a while but I remember samsung and quantum boards were up there in quality, aiming for far more than I need so I can run them on low or medium for efficiency. Some day with more time I hope to build my own. Though I currently do not have anywhere to hang them.. I'll figure that out when I am able. Below are some photos. I am going to start the seeds in fox farm happy frog/perlite mix. I'll add mykos. I hope to keep the plant in happy frog long as I can (get all the nutrients out) and then switch to Fox farm ocean forest. I've bought this heating thing to keep under the seedling tray. Do you guys think that this nutrient mix i bought will suffice and yield us tomatos? I am wanting this to be an easy simple grow I've had difficulty outdoors with calcium at one point. but I see this fert has some in it. so perhaps non issue
Tomatoes are about the easiest garden plant to grow. They love sun and lots of warmth but make sure you water them enough but not too much. It will take minimal fertilizer to get some health tomatoes. Let us know how they do! I grow several varieties but my favorite is the Sweet 100 cherry tomato. Super sweet and great in salads.
Probably going with the Samsung lm301h and an infinity 3x3 tent. I'm looking at a 4inch exhaust because it is the quietest. Does anybody have recommendations for pollen catching (allergies). I was thinking just putting some cheesecloth over it but I worry about working the motor or pollen just going through it; will help with fresh air exchange too. Of course there's the carbon filter option if the DIY options are exhausted. (scratch that, google says HEPA is to catch pollen, carbon filters it just goes through) don't think the fan would like a hepa lol nor would it a fine micron mesh Also @The Duff i have found a seed producer of cherry tomato's that have been moreorless bred for this. They max out at 18inches or so haha! On order now. Currently germinating are few indeterminates, chard, assorted greens, green beans, bell pepper.
Your nutrients look fine for tomatoes once they start setting flowers. I'd start them vegging with a nutrient more in line with the ratio of 3-1-2 NPK. I've grown a variety called TinyTim tomatoes indoors about 8 years ago. I believe they were one of the first container varieties. I grew 3 plants under a cheap LED shop light from Walmart. They only grew to about 16" tall in 3 gallon pots. I had lots of tomatoes in January. I did post pictures somewhere on GC. It sounds like a great way to introduce your child to growing. I grew Atlantic giant pumpkins with my son outdoors for his first grow.
Probably just vent the pollen out the window at this point. Little worried about Lung room but this 4 inch inline on low shouldn't be an issue.
Nice plan I hope it works out. I had a garden with my mother when we had our own house but there's no room in apartments.
What a great way to create a meaningful gardening experience with your kids! With this careful preparation, you're sure to have a bumper crop of cherry tomatoes—both fun and rewarding! Block Blast
There was alot of excitement this week when the Chard and Greens sprouted. As did all of 1 brand of our indeterminate tomatos (too which i think i will have to simply get rid of, the tiny tims will be sowed today). Peppers have yet to sprout. I too am highly excited, part of me wants to scratch my room and turn it into a grow den with plants galore... but we will stick to the tomatos and leafy greens right now
Highly disappointed in Spider-farmer quality, I reached out to them via email. On a bright note, the Tiny Tim's have sprouted!! Cheers
They could have went a few more days before transplanting, but won't have child after today for a week so wanted to do together. Need to find a way to find my recent threads I've made, took way to long to find this <3.
I saved my journal to my bookmark bar on my laptop. When my journal advances to a new page I just replace the bookmark with the newest page.
