Growing with Red and Blue CFL's ?

  1. I've been growing with standard daylight CFL's but I recently saw someone post about the usage of red and blue LED fixtures. Would supplementing light with red and blue CFL bulbs help the plant at all? Or does it just have bad news written all over it?

  2. I'm betting it's a bad idea. I don't have data to back that up but here's my reasoning... flourescent lights produce light based on the gas contained within, modified by super secret phosphor recipes. Which basically makes them come in either cool white or soft white.

Any colored bulb is made colorful by adding a semi-transparent color film - i.e. you're no longer getting the light spectrum you paid for, as much of it is now blocked by that color filter. So the red bulbs are blocking perfectly good blue light and vice versa.

Just go with white. It works for the sun and plants have been happy with that for, well,... forever. Soft white for flowering (if you don't use a HID light) and cool white for germinating and vegetating.

  3. I think your mistaking color temp/k for actual light color

When they say BLUE cfl's for veg they mean one with around 6000-6700k color temp (Should say on the package)
When they say Yellow they mean 3700-4500 roughly
When they said red they mean 2000-3500 roughly

These bulbs all look like regular 'white' cfl bulbs
