Growing seeds saved from the 60's

  1. I have have recently found a bag of seeds in my father's closet after he passed in 2017. The bag is a plain standard brown lunch bag labeled 1965-1974. It's sealed with tape but stuffed with seeds. I want to grow some with no real expectations but wanted to reach out and see if it was even possible or if they're to far gone and to old to grow. I've done ok in the past growing but not sure if there is some things I should know specific to growing seeds that are 50+ years old.

  2. Only way to know for sure is to try to sprout them.

I'm doubting they'll be viable, but you never know.

  3. If stored dry and dark, they're as viable as the day your Dad saved them for you.
Sorry for your loss... sweet legacy.
In my opinion and experience; nothing is for sure.

  4. I've read that they have found seeds that were 2000 years old and they sprouted. IDK how true it is, but yes if the seeds were well stored for the last 40 years they have a chance at sprouting. I'm kinda jealous i'd love to try 40 year old weed strains. Put them in a cup of water for 24 hours then tap them with your finger if they sink their good.

so yours should be a Pinch?

best if stored in a freezer to prevent them drying out totally

as thats what you face ..dry cells...UGH

    if that important and LEGAL!

you should seek out a botonist locally

as they are familar with the chems involved

    good luck

  6. Awesome thanks for that

  7. That's a awesome find. Keep a posting of pics as you grow them from sprout to harvest. That would be a cool nostalgic grow thread to follow. You could even send sample cotyledons in to certain labs on the internet to see what the dna of the plants are that you sprouted.
