Ahh, the title caught the eye of a few grow nerds id imagine..lol. Anyways, I came across this article about being able to grow plants in the dark and thought I'd share. Here's a blurb of the article.... To enable this new approach, Square Roots is working with gene-edited (CRISPR) plants that grow heterotrophically. More specifically, they can add biomass by uptaking carbon from acetate (a vinegar-like substance added to irrigation water) rather than relying on photosynthesis under LED lights. Effectively, these plants can grow "in the dark" on a vertical farm. Makes one wonder at what point will a cannabis enthusiast take up some gene editing and find a way to copy this. I could really dig a grow in the dark crop. Is indoor farming entering a new era? Growing without LEDs
A heterotroph is an organism that cannot produce its own food, instead taking nutrition from other sources of organic carbon, mainly plant or animal matter. In the food chain, heterotrophs are primary, secondary and tertiary consumers, but not producers. Living organisms that are heterotrophic include all animals and fungi, some bacteria and protists, and many parasitic plants. Wikipedia Good Luck With That
