Growing Apples?

  1. sorry if i put this in the wrong thread but thought it would be best in here, i understand there are alot of good horticultureists looking in this thread, anyway my question is does anyone know if you can grow apple trees from store bought apples, im not sure because i know some companies use genetics etc and make it so you cant grow there products any help please

    thanks

  2. Come, this is an MJ forum. Ask that somewhere else.

  3. the seeds that cannot grow more plants are called terminator seed technology. its very scary. http://www.ethicalinvesting.com/monsanto/terminator.shtml
but alas apples are not included in this scandal.

apples are unique in the plant world, whereas they cross with other apples and crabapples, pears, etc. the resulting seeds are not monotypic. this means that u can grow an apple plant from a store bought apple but only god can tell u what u are going to get for apples. it may be a delicious new variety, or more likely, its a sour apple not appealing (pun intended)

all production apples are clones grafted onto a root stock. so if u want a granny smith, u need to cut a clone off of a granny smith variety, and graft that clone to a rootstock (usually a winter hardy crabapple). if u just take the seed of a granny smith, u will definately never get a granny smith apple tree.

if one is interested in this topic, there is a wonderful book called 'the ominvores dilemma' it goes thru 4 plants and their history with people. apple, our beloved MJ, and 2 others. michael pollan is one of our best writers in america and his 2 recent books, the ominvores delemma and the botany of desire, are huge books. a must read.

i know its a MJ forum. but if someone can grow apples, it will only help their MJ growin.

  4. Cmon, there is nothing wrong with discussing other plants here! :D

  5. i wanna graft a pot plant to an apple tree. i think i might just do this next year.

  6. OG had a section for general gardening, maybe GC should follow suit. But I still feel that this IS a marijuana growing forum and should be kept strictly as such. Otherwise we will have shrooms and peyote growing here as well as tomatoes, potatoes, oranges, etc.

Oh, and I have a good crop of grapes this year.

  7. Appreciate all the help and am glad i posted this, i think i may just take an apple and grow a tree not neccisrily to harvest apples but just to grow it and if they happen to turn out good that would be cool too

  8. How long does it take to grow a apple tree?

I guess it gives off apples its first year... but is it that big its first year?

Actualy well if a pot plant can get like 5 feet why cant an apple....

ANd dude, tthat 'terminator technology' is bulllshit and retarded.

The poor farmers get seeds every year for there next crop as it stated.

Now why would they buy seeds if they keep getting seeds?

Fucking morons, how can you sell something to someone that doesn't need or want it?

  9. It takes an apple tree a few years before it is able to prduce fruit. In one year from seed the tree may get only several inches tall. Growing an apple tree from seed will only result in a nasty ugly looking tree. Root stock that the apple tree is grafted onto is what determines what the adult tree will look like. There is dwarf stock that will result in a tree under 12 feet tall and different stock that handles different soil types. The cool thing withan apple tree is that you can graft differnent apple types onto one tree meaning you can have one tree that grows Granny Smith, Golden and Red Delicius, Macs, Cortlands etc. It's pretty cool as you can have a tree that looks like a freak with different color fruit on it. Also note that you can not prduce apples with only one tree. You need 2 trees to pollenate each other.

  10. right now im working for a farmer and we are setting up his apple feild which has been neglected for years, some of the treese grow right along the ground and need to be pulled up and tied up so they grow straight, when growing ur apple tree train it from seedling to grow straight and you will have a much nicer tree haha.

  11. i dont think it is but could this be possible does anyone know?

  12. I'm not sure about that, however I did have an old book that explained this with some sort of vine.. can't remember (it's been 5-6 years) .. it was pretty nifty
