Grow Tents

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by Deleted member 1153948, Oct 25, 2023.

  1. I have been looking hard at several grow tents. And the vent system comes in different sizes. Before I purchase one. I have to ask this. Say, if I want my grow to be secret, I'm renting an apartment. How much electricity do they use? Will it be noticeable by management?

  2. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I'd never recommend a grow in an apartment unless you have permission from the manager. Only a matter of time before someone notices the unit, excess of electricity, or smell.

I have a couple friends who grow in apartments, but they have a really cool relationship with the managers and give 'em free weed LOL. Doesn't sound like it with your case.

You could run a single 100W panel tent and it would be pretty negligible. The fans for exhaust typically use a lot less energy than the lights.

You should be able to add up all of the watts from each equipment item and put it into a watt hour cost calculator on Google.

My 100w solo cab only uses like $10 worth a month. Maybe less.

Produces a qp every three months.

I did the math for you my 100w cab uses $9.13 / month if it's on 20/4 schedule.

For reference, a standard 1,000w microwave uses that much electricity in a couple hours.

One last edit: there are quite a number of strains with much less distinct odors. Strawberry Lemonade that I grow for example doesn't really smell like weed.

  4. Here are my secrets for growing in an apartment. Your main issue will be smell, followed by humidity depending on your grow opp size.
    use quality led light
stay small, 1 or 2 plant a time (beside seedlings).
stick with low smell strains forget about OG and friends
do it only in the winter, as it is naturally dryer with heating
use high quality filters in flowering and
**double exhaust: exhaust at low speed in the apartment, with a filter outside of the tent, air pushing thru filter
and «Y» connect your dryer (with a valve) the other exhaust, filter in the tent air being pulled, so the air goes outside. You'll have to turn off this fan when using your dryer. Doing this in the winter really minimize risk of smell. You'll have a small negative pressure in the apt. Not much neighbours outside to detect left over smell. Heating expenses will cover electric expenses,
As far as the cost, hard to say as I don't know the cost of power where you are. You can check a bill maybe...
So a light for 2 plant, with 200 watt in a 2x4 tent you will be just fine.
Exhaust and fans you could count an other 150 to 175 watt.
That's it if you can contain humidity in the good range=)

  5. Gosh, thanks! I am absolutely horrible with numbers. I never got past fractions in high school and I forgot most of that. I'm just a dumbass when it comes to numbers. I was going to try to grow one plant at a time to get the hang of it plus just one ounce of weed will last me a month or more. I'm a lightweight. 4 good hits off of some quality Indica and I'm good for 24 hours. Or 5 mg edible will last me 24 hours. And of course, I have to have my CBD. I am interested in growing 100% Indica for pain control. It seems they don't want to operate until it gets real bad.

  6. Yeah, I thought about that. And if I do have to rent, I will ask first, and if they say no, then I'll abide by their wishes. But I did discover a trailer park that rents to own in Illinois. I'll keep that in the back of my mind as a last-resort type thing. There is always a move back home to Kentucky. I won't be able to use a bong but the law says that I can buy raw cannabis to use for vaping, all that other stuff you do to it to make it concentrated and put it in liquid form. I was thinking about contacting one of the farms that will be growing it and see if they would be willing to let me donate some pure Indica seeds for the medical market that will open up in that state on Jan.1, 2025.

  7. I am in a rented house at the moment, I have been able to extend the lease because of medical reason. So I am with you on the same both I will have to move next spring and can't afford to buy a house. I'll be moving to a condo and I won't stop growing. I will have to adapt but I will be growing.
With one plant at a time and a good carbon filter you'll be just fine. You could connect you exhaust fan to a AC window kit to keep it stealth, something like that..
    https://www.amazon.ca/Portable-Air-Conditioner-Window-Kit/s?k=Portable+Air+Conditioner+Window+Kit
or make a stealth window exhaust, something like this..

I don't know if you have growing experience and don't mean to be a bummer, but finding a CBD rich plant will be complicated. With all the crosses and fast breeding practices, few strains have been stabilised enough to offer only offsprings of rich CBD phenotypes. There is a lot of snake oil in the breeding business. And CBD is something hard to feel or estimate the real % when you take a few hits. Dispensary strains offering 10 to 18% CBD required a lot of time in research, space, lots of plants and lab testings. Personally, I found that buying CBD from the store was safer.

I am in living in Canada, where cannabis is * supposed * to be fully legal. But as the opposite from the US, it is the states that are more severe than the federal. I don't understand what the fuck is the problem with smoking some herb. Even with full federal legalisation, a medical permit, it is still forbidden to grow where I live.

  8. I am so fucking desperate for REAL WEED it's not even funny!! I'm seriously considering moving to Illinois if I can get a government loan for my own house. I've never done that before so I don't know how to go about it! I just want to be able to grow my own, that way I know what is in it and what strain it is.

  9. come to Ohio

  10. I am in the same situation, growing in condo and first time grower. My plant is about 60-70 days old from sprouting. It has lots of leaf but no strong smell. Just very mild mint smell 1 feet away.

When will it start to smell strong?
You said growing 2 plants is fine. Do you mean growing 2 plants that are both flowering is fine?

2 plants both flowering will need a minimum tent size of 2x4 feet right?

  11. Two ladies in that should be plenty. I am currently living in a apt. Got two tents going 4x8 and 4x4. Takes up my whole dining room..lol Two grows fem n autos. Not real concerned about the smell yet. Legal here now so I'm not as hot or cautious as before. Nice tips in here on apt growing.

  12. -well, depend on genetic and strain; some plants are stinking even in vedge, but usually smells really kicks in and start to get funky in mid flowering. At this point, without a filter the smell will be an issue. Or maybe you are lucky, and your plant just have really really low smell. On the other hand we all love plants that are fragrant right?!!
-2 plants in flower in a 2x4 will be fine. Will be hard to have one in vedge and one flowering in same tent at same time, unless they are autos. In that case no problem but yeah I meant 2 in flower at the same time.

  13. Is that photo of two tents side by side?
How and when do you use these two tents?

    Two grows fem n autos.
    >>fem? You growing only 2 now?

Not real concerned about the smell yet.
    >>Are you getting a lot of smell?

  14. I will make my own rack/tent(4x2ft) (cheaper but it's not fully covered, partly open) and keep it in the room. Any smell from the plant will leak into the room for sure.
If I want to use a filter and exhaust fan, then I think it should be fitted to the window. Fit exhaust fan to window first, then fit the filter to the exhaust fan on the inside. Keep the rack near the window. Will this work?

  15. I've only been growing fem photoperiod. At the moment I am still in an house I'm renting. I'll make sure to grow as much as I can before end of lease. But I lived in apt before. You will need a good carbon filter.
For now I couldn't care less about smell. I exhaust straight outside, no filter. In the summer, with neighbours outside in their yard, It is better to try to avoid growing or to limit plants count just by respect. But again best suggestion is to avoid anything that have strong odour like Indicas, kushes, OG, cheese strains, well, basically anything musky and stinky. In the winter, exhausting outside is less of a concern. The warmer air coming from your room will naturally goes up and dissipate quicker than in hot humid summer day. And mostly people would spend more time inside and less time outside. No BBQ familly dinner.

  16. Yep that's the best way. Don't worry about smell leaking if you are exhausting the air from your cabinet it will create negative pressure that won't allow stinky air from coming out. If you do passive intake, you'll need about 3 times the space of your exhaust (don't know how to formulate this, english is my 2nd language, but what I mean is if you exhaust wit a 4 inches fan, you'll need 3 port of 4 inches for passive intake)

    >>Cabinet?
I don't understand this negative pressure. Maybe you can explain it differently.
Coming out? Coming out of what?

    If you do passive intake
    >>What is passive intake?

  19. Photos are in the 4x4 Scrog..two plants
Autos in one side of 4x8. Looking for another lamp to go in there. 4 autos so far and seeds on the way for more. I'll be starting a grow log soon. Prob today.

  20. It just mean that you are not using an inline fan to push fresh air in the cabinet. The air intake is done by the force of the exhaust fan pushing air outside.
