Grow Cab Plans/advice -150W HPS (Design Attached)

Discussion in 'Grow Room Design/Setup' started by datkidganga, Oct 9, 2011.

  1. Hi all. Long time lurker, and wanted to start off by saying thanks the endless information that can be found through this community. So I've had small CFL grows in the past that went well, but wanted to move up slightly to a 150W Hps. First though, i wanted to run through what i have been thinking for a new cabinet and wanted to see what you all thought. Roughs designs of cabinet are attached.

    Info:
I want to get feminized seeds and grow 1 plant a time until i am more experienced.

    The cabinet:

The cabinet is 27.69in x 14.69in x 40.31in. This gives about 9 cubic feet. I want to get feminized seeds and grow 1 plant at a time until i get more experience. I was thinking i could have one 10in or 12in pot and give as much health to the plant as i can with such a small space. I want to get a 150W HPS with remote ballest. I would mount the light to the top of the cab and heighten and lower the plant as necessary. My main concern is heat, and would like to hear your suggestions. This is how i think i want to do it.

I would run a sheet of 3mm glass under the light across the entire box, I would set up a 4inch exhast along with two 4 inch passive intakes to cool the light. The exhast would be pushed with a 120mm computer fan. Then, i would use the same method for the cab with 1 exhast in the top right, and two 4in passive intires in the bottom left. That way, i will be cooling the bulb itself with a ventalation system, and have a separate one for the cab to maintain temps and get the plant fresh air. The glass would help prevent some heat (every bit counts) and the cab would still be getting ventalation. What do you guys think? Will the glass and two vent systems be enough to keep a 9 cubic foot cab cool enough? I'd love to be in mid 80's at least. As for exhast fan pressure and restrictions, odor isnt really an issue so the fan will be running with little to low restrictions into a a light trap.

The 1 plant would probably be topped or LSt'd until i feel that it is time to flower due to space requirements (expecting the plant will double in size). I could SCROG the single plant as well. Up for suggestions with that.

Again thank you for the advise and suggestions!

  2. Anyone? Looking for any experiences at all that are related to any part of this. Anyone grow with an 150w hps and run into heat issues? How big was the cab? What did you do to solve it/ what didn't work?

Has anyone tried using a sheet of glass instead of a cooltube? How did it work? I know you lose 10-20% of wattage when using a glass barrier. Again, any and all help/ suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I think this setup will work out well, but wanted to see what the community thought. Thanks guys.
