    This may seem like a stupid question, BUT, I'm new to the forum so, how do you go about uploading an avatar?

    Look toward the top of any page over to the left. You'll see User CP. Click on that. In the left column of your control panel, three sections down is Settings and Options. First choice in that section is Edit Avatar.
