I heard that a normal green light can be used to look at your grow during the night..is this true? I have a normal (25w) light bulb from the local DIY store
Yes thats true...I do it, but then you gotta ask yourself WHY? do it with the HPS starting up, or with sun glasses on....lol "V"
David: that might be true, but why bother them? Do you like somebody disturbing your rest by waking you up in the middle of the night? I don't. I zip my girls up at night and wish them sweet dreams and I suggest you do the same. Hank
Ah...! but Hank I occasionally leave something I forget to retrieve last minute in the bud room, only to find I gotta stumble thru my jungle to get it, although an up date to this would be a flash light with a green lens, now thats cheap and simple, bit of candy wrapper covering the lens outta do it, but Hank yes you are correct! peace "V"
i guess the above 2 here have never had an issue arise during the dark period that they were able to fix without bringing light into the room lol... green lights, will save you trouble if you HAVE to go into the room during dark period, there are unforeseen issues with everything, and if you end up with trouble mid dark period... you definitely want to be able to fix said problem without disturbing your babies... hence the green light otherwise... as they have said... just let them sleep at night.. would you want some huge plant coming and waking you up at night even if they kept the room dark? EDIT: i got fucking ninja'd while typing this
The only light switch in my grow room controls two green CFL lights in the ceiling. I use these, rarely, but for just such an occasion.
Thanks for the advice guys. I want the green light to be on the safe side, sometimes I'd like to peek in and have a look, make sure everythings ok, things are working properly and all is good. Does anyone know if the duration of the green light thats on will have any affect on the light cycle?
The plants are GREEN, cause it's the only color they don't absorb, they don't use green light, so if they don't use it, then it can be deduced that it may have No effect on there growth (edit) "V"
He Guys: has any one thought of consulting an expert like Mr. Danko at "HIGH TIMES?" or possibly some of the ones like: Cervantes, Rosenthal or Greg Green? I would be reluctant to join you on this without the support of some technical data. I was at two of my favorite hydro stores yesterday and I didn't see any green lights. I've seen them in curly-cue CFL's at Walmart, in the party section, and at the Home Depot sold as a novelty but I haven't run across them at school, in the literature or being recommended by an of the sources I trust. I was convinced by a couple of good teachers that to grow successfully you really have to get your feces together. What are you going to leave in your grow area that's so important that it would necessitate you going back in there? So far that has never come up for me. I grow in a small tent and my ladies regularly get zipped up just before the light is scheduled to be turned off by a timer and then I crawl into bed. The last thing I do before I enclose them for the night is to take a quick look. And yes, I like to look at my plants too. I would suggest you try this: I go to bed at about the same time every night, around 11:00 pm and I'm up at five in the morning, just habit. Literally everything is on an individual $5 Harbor Freight Tools Christmas lights timer. All the timers are plugged into a single multiple outlet power strip four feet long from the same store. It's rated for 1800 watts and it was on sale for about $25. When the lights go off so does the fan and filter. If I'm bubble tubbing a crop, the pumps in the reservoir go off but the air pumps continue for the next six hours. They're on 24/7. (They're hooked up directly to the power strip). If I'm growing in dirt then it's all off and quiet. I need my five hours of rest and I assume that my ladies need their beauty rest so I'd suggest your plan you activities to coincide with their schedule. Everything in my tent is programmed to go back on in accordance with the light schedule I'm using the next day. It's not that hard. Please don't make it more difficult for yourself than it needs to be. I hope that helps. Hank
You know what I think is cool about growing indoors? There are so many methods and options available to us that we each build a grow that suits our own personal lifestyle. Some use green lights, some don't. We're all different, and we've all found a way to grow in our spare time. Love it! Kudos to everyone, and their personal input about growing!
Thanks for everyones input and friendly advice. Most helpful and constructive forum I've been too. Thanks again and god bless!
I actually ordered one of these.... Amazon.com: Hydrofarm AELH Active Eye Green LED Head Light: Patio, Lawn & Garden!!!

So if I was to use incandescent green bulbs to heat my grow tent in a cool basement that wouldn't affect the light cycle of the plants? Looking for an alternative to using a heater
Why disturb your plants while they are sleeping. I suggest leaving them alone. There is nothing in the 12 hours they sleep that is worth opening up your tent and disturbing them, that wont be there when the lights come on. Green light actually does drive photosynthesis, the whole "plants dont use green because they are green is false" They use green light for photosytheis, but green light doesn't affect the flowering trigger which is red and some blue light. I suggest leaving the plants alone while they sleep.
I Not looking to disturb the plants during their night cycle, im trying to find an alternative to using a heater and I hear incandescent bulbs will put off a good amount of heat. Just wondering if using a green incandescent bulb would affect the cycle if left running 24/7
