Graffiti (Er... Fo' shizzle?)

Discussion in 'The Artist's Corner' started by Eyes, Jul 7, 2006.

  1. I'm a participant in some... Art activities with my friends every now and again.
And I'd like to say how deep and widespread the graffiti culture is where I live. We see the same tag everywhere, and we decide which ones we like or hate. There's a tag that's just plain NLB, and he/she is everywhere, and it gets to the point of being annoying. I'm all for the art, but some scribbles can be alright if they're meaningful and in a purposeful place, not on the side of some owned property.
Banksy (the famous graffiti dude) came from where I live... He's really innovative and does some stunts that I intend to do soon (similarly). (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banksy) I can see around Bristol how peoples tags have progressed and how we can learn about people through their tags "Do you know who that NUM* guy is?" "No..." "Well, he got arrested yesterday" "Whoah".
It's like a mini soap opera sometimes in the form of spray paint =P

  2. grafitti is huge in my area too. Especially since the punishment is so severe here...its almost like saying "try to catch me." Banksy really started the stencil movement... hasnt really caught on here. I think that simple tags are really a waste of time unless the location is ballsy or clever. I make my own stencils of famous people/figures...usually politically involved, and put them on canvas or cardboard etc. Im not going to try anything big until after I finish school...I'm not trying to get kicked out.

  3. Bank was for sure a driving force in getting up with stencils but NEVER forget Giant. I have so much respect for that man! As for the "simple tag" comment im a little confused on what your trying to say glitch? also Eyes everything that anybody paints on is "owned property". I will hit anything as long as its not like someones fence or someones car or personal items. As for government buildings and city owned shit I get up on that shit as much as possible, but never like a statue or shit like that.

    I did this last summer

  4. graffiti around my area is huge too. The vandal squad is always fucking creeping around my neighborhood somewhere. I used to bomb, but not anymore, ill throw up the occasional piece w/ a paint marker on a apartment building wall or w/e when im bored but im done with spray paint.

  5. where do you live Eyes

  6. I'm saying that a simple tag that says like "SOUR" or "RATS" (simply just text) with little or no flair just on a random wall really doesnt do it for me. However if there is a simple tag on some place ballsy, like for instance, a Cop car, or the front sign of a govt building, then I have a certain amount of respect for it. I really do love a clever composition whether its the classic multicolor text or an elaborate stenciling.

  7. Graf's pretty sick, but it's all about political art, like Obey Giant, done by Shepard Fairey. You can't deny that his shit is always fresh, and he catches some of the ballsiest spots on this planet.I sport nothing but Obey clothing,I'm a huuuge fan of his.

  8. yeah, man. graff is all about a purpose...greg 'craola' simkins or mike giant are two of the best in my opinion. the culture itself has gone to hell, but the true writers, you can see that they did evolve and became something great... props to any other writers on GC/

  9. most graff artists use a short name, 3-6 letters. Elaborate words are a bitch.

Check out www.bombingscience.com for some ill pieces, tags, throws, the works. they sell paint and tips too.

  10. i write for me.nothing beats seeing your ups around town. although i do follow the unwritten rules, no private property,(cars churches houses fences) for me its a game, but i know foos thatll kill you for burnin their shit, crazy people

  11. my older stuff is ussually a bit political, back then i believe public space was for the people, so id hit up everything with throw ups and quickies. but i got out of it. then i used to slap, not write. here is a pics of my older sticks.

i got into extacy at one point, not anymore:
    'E'
there was alot of gun violence in my old area:
    happy?
    just felt like doing it:
    nak

alot of the writers just throw stuff around to get thier name up. but a few had a meaning and symbolism to our stuff.
