So I just got a job as a DJ at one of the local stations, working in two-hour blocks to start out with. I'm also going to review CD's for the station to find out which songs are good/playable (no curse words, etc.), and I think I get $1.50 for every CD I review. But the reason I'm posting this is because one of the things I want to do is play some newer/more obscure bands, instead of just the bands everybody knows already, and I was wondering if you blades have any suggestions. As long as it's not country, I'm looking to play just about anything I think sounds good.
Whats the demographic, when is the time slot, what are you into? I think if I got on the radio it'd be all reggae, triphop, blues, dub..
It's a college radio station, but they play just about everything. And the time slot's 4-6 PM. And I like everything but country.
Hmm, I'd just mix up my playlist kinda thing, like.. Zeppelin, then switch to some Death in Vegas, onto some Steel Pulse, bring it through onto some Sublime, back out there with some Bonobo, some Hendrix, a bit of Canned Heat, some Creedence, Faithless, back to reggae Eek-A-Mouse, Toots & The Maytals, some T-bone Walker, then Neil Young, etc etc etc,

ANYTHING by the rapper Blu. I HIGHLY suggest downloading and listening to his album "Below the Heavens" by Blu & Exile (Exile is the producer, Blu the rapper). I'll even help you pick out songs from him if you'd like.

OK, so while the station I've been working at calls itself an "Alternative" station, in reality, it only calls itself that because it tries to find lesser known artists and songs to play. Most DJ's each have their own certain catagory. Like the guy who comes right before me is big on heavy metal, while the girl who goes on right after me does a lot of jazz. So when I realized I needed to find my niche, it didn't take too long before I realized to just go with what I like best. I've got a pretty good idea of what I'm gonna play for my first session, and what I could find on youtube I posted below. Thanks for all your suggestions so far. They've introduced me to some acts I've really gotten to like, and while they may not be on the list for this week, it's only because I've only got two hours to work with. Chances are they'll make an appearance at some point though. Also, I have to take a break from the songs and announce the news/weather fifteen minutes past every hour, so I'm planning on having a special 4:20 song right after the break.
