Good start?

  1. Hi!

I will try to start my first grow. I will use seeds (dunno which one again). I read the grandpa grow guide and I'm sure that I able to do it. :)

I will have 1 or 2 fluorescent like these one.... http://www.homedepot.com/prel80/HDU...earchResults.jsp&MID=9876&N=2984+4233&pos=n12

Enough...too much? My closet have 4 X 2 feets and 8 feets high. I plan to divide it in 2 stage (with one fluorescent per stage). That will allow me to have 2 rooms of 2 X 4 X 8 ! Too small? I want to put 2 plants per stage.

I will try to control temperature with an halogen lamp ... everyone know that these lamp create heat very fast so if the temp is too much low I will open it (not directly on the plant) to create some heat.

I will buy some white mylar at homedepot. How much it cost?

For the PH can I use a pool PH kit? I want to water them with PH adjusted water.

The first week in the closet it will be 24/7 light ON like grandpa said

My only concern is about odors! With 2 to 4 plants will I have a lot of odors? How to solve this problem?

I want a decent harvest with good quality. With this setup and few ferts how many oz you think I will have?

I need some seed suggestion too...good quality, easy for the first time and give a lot of big buds! :)

What is the lightning time for veg and for flowering (18on/6off and 12/12)? Also, I would like to know how many time last the veg and flowering?

  2. Well first off, good work on reading some grow guides. Second all your links to lights don't work like you want. They just bring people to the lighting home page of homedepot. And yes 320 watts would be enough light for 3 plants.

You most likely won't have to worry about heating the grow room up as mj plants like the temps to be between 70-75 degrees F.

You shouldn't have to adjust the ph in your water too much, unless the source your using is naturally too acidic or base. A lot of people use rainwater. I use spring water that I have delivered to my house, but you can simply use tap water and leave it out for a day or two.(you might want to invest in a ph test strip kit if the water in your area is particularly harsh) If you do need to adjust the ph of your water then Yes your pool ph kit will do fine.

Odor is going to be a concern of yours with 3 plants producing a decent amount of bud. You could grow a strain that is low in odor. Or you can go many other routes. I see you can't vent and well that sucks. If you have one of those ionic air things they do wonders, if you don't just use a lot of air fresheners and candles.

Harvest weight depends on the strain, the conditions it was grown under, and how big you let it grow before you flower it so its hard to guess.

As far as seed suggestion goes, I would recommend nirvanas papaya strain. I grow a special cross of it and I grow some every crop. Big buds, big punch, quick growth, early maturing. Even if you didn't like smoke (which you will), the plant itself is great just to have for crosses. When I do grow regular papaya I normally harvest 2-3 oz per plant in soil dry weight. And I am sure a better grower then myself could get a higher weight.

Veg times, once again depending on what you do, normally only last for about a month. Flowering, depending on strain, takes 8-10 weeks, some strains can take even longer but they are very rare.
Hope this helps and good luck.

  3. They are normal double fluorescents light anyway. :) It will cost me about the same to buy an HPS light. But still i can't have ventilation the HPS is not really a good way to go. 320 watts is ok...what would be the limit for 2 plants? 200 watts?

In the closet that I will use its actually 81F without any lightning. Maybe I'm better to wait until fall to have some "control" on the temperature!?!? The fluorescent will create heat? Maybe I have an idea to have ventilation...I would make a big box that contain 2 plants and this box would be in the closet. The door of the closet can be open with some ventilation to get out the heat. If that work I can make 2 box like this to put in my closet. 3 3/4 long X 2 3/4 wide X 3 3/4 high feets for 2 plants is enough?

Iconic air things? They would eliminate the odor? I don't know what it is....?!?!?

If I understand well its me that decide? But its around 1 month and half? For flowering I follow the instruction of the seeds?

    thank you!

  4. Let me know if you find Mylar at Home Depot. I checked mine and they didnt seem to have it. Good luck!

  5. Ok! Where did you bought it?

  6. I looked at the temperature in the entire apartment and its not under 28C and its 27C outside today. Even with ventilation I cant get under the temp that the apartment have...!

I need to buy all the stuff, assemble the room and start to grow! :)

When they write 40$ for skunk strain (exemple)...its how many seeds?

  7. First don't worry if your temps aren't prefect the plant will grow fine in 80 degree weather. Its when the temps get 90+ that you will start to see signs of heat stress.

Cfls barely create any heat at all. In fact you can keep them about 1.5-3 inches away from the plant due to the low heat they put out. As far as 200 watts for 2 plants, yes I think you should be fine. The general rule of thumb is 50 watts of hid lighting per sq foot. Cfls are as effective but you have double the wattage so you should be just fine.

Most seeds are sold in 10 packs but you they can be any number, 12,15,20 etc. It will be very rare for a pack to have less then 10.

Your going to want some ventilation if only so that your plant gets fresh air. It makes a surprising difference in quality and quantity.

  8. Heres the link to Nirvanas papaya strain that I love to grow. Gypsys the guy I got all my seeds from and I've never had a problem. Hell he might even give you a free pack of somthing esle when you order. And if you don't want nirvana seeds thats ok they got a long list of other companys. Hope this helps and happy growing.

  9. Hi moggy!

I decided to buy a 250 watts HPS light for my grow and use fluorescent for veg. Since the plants are tiny in veg period...should I need 200 watts of fluorescent too?

I decided to buy a storage cabinet like this one
    http://www.staples.ca/ENG/Catalog/cat_sku.asp?CatIds=104,105,107&webid=598440&affixedcode=WW
    and have ventilation in it.

Carbon filter are very effective for odor? Do we need a lot of them to work good?

What is the light distance from plants if I use HPS light? I think this is very important!?!?!

  10. In the papaya's description its write "1 till 2 weeks growth is enough." That mean that the veg time is 1 to 2 weeks!??!?!?

    http://www.seedboutique.com/store/index.php?manufacturers_id=64
    They are 100% sure female?

I plan to buy these AK-48 seeds...very good reviews and I like the look of this plant. I don't want a to smelly grow and I prefer wide and low plant over slim and tall. Good choice?

    steeve

  11. Well I can't see the cabinet but you've seen one cabinet you've seen am all. While you may not need 200 watts of light in the veg cycle, it will make them grow bigger faster.

And yes carbon filters are very effective at getting rid of the odor. You should only need one filter and that should be on your exhaust.

I have never used a 250 watt hps myself but I would guess that you would want it around 6 inches away or so. To make sure place your hand on top of your plant, if its uncomfortable to keep it there then the light needs to be backed uped.

Yes the 1 to 2 weeks is the suggested veg time due to its quick growth. Yes they are all females. And I couldn't tell you about ak-48 as I have never grown it, its on my list to grow.

  12. Carbon filter are expensive?

papaya's strain only = 1 to 2 week veg or all strain? I heard taht usually its 1 month of veg.

    steeve

  13. Yes unfortunately they are expensive, so if you can't afford it just try to mask it with air fresheners and burning candles.

Yes they say you need only veg the plant 1-2 weeks, normally done flowering in 7-8 weeks. And yes its normally one month for veg. I still veg my plants out to 1-1 1/2 months. The only thing that happens is I get really big plants, which I prefer as I don't have to grow as often(I only grow so my friends and I don't have to buy).

You mentioned before that you wanted a wide and low plant. Well papaya stays relatively short. I use LST or low stress training as well. This ensures they stay low and wide while providing more light to lower branch sites. Heres the link to vokals Lst method. Its probably the best instructions on how to lst I have ever read.

  14. Cheap carbon filters.
    http://cgi.ebay.com/HOLMES-HARMONY-...ryZ43510QQssPageNameZWD1VQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Do they last long time? I plan to use one from day 1 to mid flowering and change it for a new for the rest of flowering. I want no odor at all. Also, I had an idea to block light and have nice odor.

Its build a filter like that...and fill it with some fleecy sheets (the thing that we put in clothes dryers to have fresh odor). But if I do this I will need a bigger fan. Or put 2 fans on the same output...its possible?

This would work better? I guess that if the carbon filter don't work 100% the ionizer will kill what the carbon filter can't?!?

    Cheap mylar

  15. My final setup (I think) :p

-30 inchs wide X 17 inchs deep X 59 inchs high cabinet (maybe a bit bigger depend if I will find something friday, I would like it a bit deeper) ;)
    -250 watts HPS light
-Mylar all over the wall (medical blanket)
-2 or 4 passive intake in the floor (with 90* elbow to light proof them)
    -1 X 8 to 12 inchs exhaust fan
-1 homemade carbon filter (light proof the exhaust at the same time)
    -1 osc fan
    -B-52 Skunk strain
    -Wireless thermometer/humidity unit
    -Tomato soil
-Dunno which fert I will use but I will use it brightly! :) If they say to put 1/5 ratio I will put 1/10 ratio...

I will have 2-3 plants inside this cabinet and the other will be outside. CANT WAIT! :smoking::smoking::smoking::smoking:

If all go like I want I think I will be able to have my first harvest EVER during chrismas holiday! Good timing! hehe

    bye

  16. That looks like a great carbon filter system to make. I currently don't use a carbon filter system I just vent it through out my place, don't really care about the smell, so I couldn't tell you how often you would have to replace it. Although I don't think you will have any problems if you change the filter like you stated.

Don't worry about the ionic air purifier. Most people grow using a carbon filter to scrub the exhaust air and it eliminates the most/all odors from my understanding.

Your final set up looks great. If you can find a bigger box even better cause the more room you have to grow the more bud you can grow =). Excellent choice on the strain. Good producer and useful to have around if you ever decide to cross breed =). Its good to be cautious with ferts because a lot of people over do it and end up hurting the plant. Just remember that ferts are like food for a plant; too much and you'll make it sick and give it health problems: to little and it'll be a starved weaklin.
Good luck with the grow and when its done you have to post pictures.

  17. Ok a bigger box is on my list! :) hehe

I will posts pictures every weeks.

  18. Ok I just bought my 250 watts HPS light at www.gorilla-grow.com (In canada). I paid 210$ all included, all brand new and 2 years guaranty. At www.insidesun.com they were charging me like 85$ for shipping + 125$ for the light + 20% of taxes and dutys.

I still dunno for the cabinet...

    -37 X 20 X 60 inchs

    or

    -30 X 17 X 60 inchs

    ???

I want 2 plants or 3! I'm affraid that if I take the bigger cabinet that the 250 watts light will not be able to light them up succesfully!?!?? I found a watts VS space calculator and for the bigger cabinet I would need a 300 watts HPS light to cover them all well and for the smaller I would need 180 watts. I think I will be better with the smaller one. The bigger one is 120$ and the smaller one is 60$ for few more inchs the bigger don't worth I think...

What space a single plant need ? 3 plants in that 30 X 17 X 60 inchs would be ok?

    steeve

  19. Good buy on the light, the 250's are extremely verse tail and can be used a lot closer then the higher wattage ones.

Yeah I see why you’re leaning towards the smaller one. For a 60-dollar increase you don't much added space.

As far as your 250 having enough juice to cover the larger box, don't worry about it. The 250 should cover the box quite nicely, leaving only a few dark and dim spots. If you wanted to you could fix those spots with some warm white light cfls.

Single plants vary in size. Some people grow ungodly large plants and take months vegging them, others grow am small and fast. You should be able to fit 3 ten-inch square pots in there. While it doesn't seem like much it should provide you with enough soil to produce a good size harvest.
