Been marginally overeweight for the last several years and I'm just sick of the extra pounds. I'm also looking at my future, my dad just had a triple bypass and I definitely don't want to go that route...So after thanksgiving I'm thinking of cutting all meat and processed foods out of my diet and becoming strictly a vegetarian.
Definitely cut out processed foods and refined sugars. Not eating meat will help in the sense that now you'll have an excuse to stay away from red meat and friend meats. Sure some people will say; well all meat isn't that bad. But that still leaves room for you to every now and then eat some wings or a burger. Cutting out meat will make sure your diet is sharp throughout the entire week, month, etc. I was a meat eater for the most of my life, but I cut it out for health reasons (not so much weight reasons). I enjoyed it so much that two years later I took it a step further and went vegan. I actually enjoy my diet a lot more now. I'm in control of what I eat now, not my taste buds. Also check out a show Sanjay Gupta had on CNN.. it stated that you pretty much have a 100% chance of preventing heart disease (America's number one killer) by going vegan. But even vegetarian is a lot better than being a meat eater with respect to heart health, as long as you can limit your dairy consumption.
if you really want to prove your point and put a stamp on your decision then i recommend starting BEFORE thanksgiving. that will really "wow" your family members and just build on your confidence. if you tell people you're gonna be a vegetarian after thanksgiving they will say to your face, "good job" but really, they mean "yeah right that won't last."
I've always wanted to be Vegan because the pretentious attitude that goes along with it fits my personality perfectly, but I appreciate junk food too much to go for it right now. Plus my metabolism is still giving me an excuse to eat whatever I want. In a couple years ill go V though
i tried being a veggie head. its hard to get all the vitmins and complete proteins in your diet if you dont know what youre doing. Do you want to just clean up your diet? if you do then you dont have to become a vegetrain. meat is good for you man, humans are meant to eat it. now if its like slim jims and fried meat thats a different stroy.
If humans are meant to eat meat. Why aren't they biologically designed to eat it? You can't even eat raw meat from feral animals without getting critically ill. http://michaelbluejay.com/veg/natural.html As of now humans are opportunistic omnivores, in other words you can adapt to eat meat in survival situations. But biologically, you're a herbivore. (By the way, I don't agree with everything in that link, but about 95% of it is just the things that I would say, but don't feel like typing out.)
this thread makes me want to go eat a big, tender, rare, steak.
I'm more of a medium rare kind of guy but I'm with you

we are designed to eat meat, thats why they cooked with fire. besides you can eat fish raw and not get sick. early humans ate a lot of fish, supposedly thats why we became smarter then big foots ;p
I guess Id rather be a dumb big foot then eat raw untreated fish. I don't know, maybe some people like the pathogens. And because we created fire, that means we are designed to eat meat, huh? I guess because we made modern chemistry, we are designed to use amphetamines?
We started cooking food by accident. After homo sapiens would finish hunting food for the day, they would go light a fire for the nighttime and bring the food with them. They started to notice that the food that was kept near the fire for a long stretch of time started to taste better. That was when we started to cook foods. You are aware that our appendix used to serve as a functioning organ, right? Do you even know what the appendix used to do? Homo sapiens were born with an appendix to digest raw meat. And then something called evolution happened and now we're still born with one, but a useless one. And just because we are able to tolerate the consumption of meat, doesn't mean that we were designed that way; we evolved and adapted to be able to consume meat. The same way that only 25% of the human population can tolerate small amounts of dairy (lactose); throughout time generations of humans adapted to the increase of lactose consumption to where our digestive systems evolved into being able to produce lactase (the enzyme that digests lactose).
Cavemen/humans back in the day/people from different countrys out where there's sand and oil eat raw meat all the time, your body has to be used to it or else you will get VERY sick. I used to know a very nice Lebanese guy who ate raw beef, it was considered a treat he said where he was from LOL.
"you eat meat!? don't ya know that's bad for you?" "you're a vegan? you pussy." pretty much how it goes...
> Charles Darwin proposed it was once used by primates to digest leaves. Now, the appendix in humans seems to be a depository of sorts for bacteria that is used in the colon to aid in digestion and absorption. These bacteria, along with others, may cause appendicitis
ok fish wasnt toxic to eat when humans beings first ate them. they probably ate from a clean eco system. what do you think sushi is? it is not cooked. and plus, the omega fatty acids in fish do help the brain. If youre going to be a vegeterian then your going to have to eat a lot of veriaty of food to be healthy. but why not just eat meat and veggies and exercise,of course. you will be a lot healthier.
Sushi is sanitized before you eat it to kill the pathogens. Did you seriously think when people eat sushi, its just raw, untreated fish? Anyway, essential fatty acids can be found in many plant foods in adequate amounts. And ALA omega-3 effectively converts to EPA/DHA omega 3 in your body. (Of course, if your going to google info on this, ignore any results from websites dedicated to selling/promoting fish oil pills, can you say bias?) And I mean, its not hard whatsoever to eat a fully plant based diet and get all essential nutrients. I do it pretty much with no effort.
idk how sushi is perpared but all im saying is that humans were meant to eat meat, even in small amounts. and name some plants that i can buy at a food store that has enough omega 3 and EFA? none, because unless you grow youre own vegetables youre not getting enough. And I bet youre not just eating veggies either, you probably base youre diet around wheat and processed food like chez its. good luck with that hypertension.
