Gnats

Discussion in 'Sick Plants and Problems' started by SlyPolak, Jun 14, 2011.

  1. Hello.. have had these gnats for about a month now, at first they seemed to do no harm..
Then I noticed these tiny holes on some new growth.. It seems as if they do the damage when the leaf is just appearing.. so a microscopic bite grows into something ugly...

Seemed that the 4 consecutive days I foliar fed my girs some epsom the gnats disappeared... now slowly appearing back.. AND SO IS THE DAMAGE

Have tried fly paper but noting ever sticks, gnats rarely fly out of the girls... Want to cure the problem now before the girls go fully into budding

Best pic of one of the squished culprits

Not that I know of, looked but couldnt see shit. Only water when soil goes dry, sometimes a week between waterings!
Thought that a flush I did around the same time I foliar fed helped reduce the amount of flies but they bounce back pretty quick.
Really dont want to use soap.....

Edit: Was thinking about Azamax but no dro stores around and really dont feel like ordering ANOTHER thing online....
would this work .. Southern Ag Triple-Action Neem Oil ?
    MSDS

  4. If they aint that bad, it just might do the trick.
U can also try Spinosad, sand, BT.
They like blue and yellow, so those sticky strips
    will help too.

  5. Well the gnats arent bad at all... RARELY see them unless I'm really messing with the foliage. The reason their bothering me is the damage, have had a fly trap in there for a week and caught 1 fly!
Think I'm going to get the "Triple Action" oil from HD, now I'm wondering about the concentration I should use.
Should I just go with the recommended directions or weaker?
    It says
and to just spray the hell out of them every 7 days...
Thinking of going 1 tbs/gallon and only reapplying if I see gnats again..
    What you think boss???

  6. I alwayz start with what the label says, unless it seems too drastic.
That way, u have a starting point and can + or - as needed.

I did look at the product yesterday but cant remember
and I just thought of it - what is the main active ingredient (Neem ???)
and whats its percentage. Sorry. I see so many product monographs lol.

    ACTIVE INGREDIENT
Clarified Hydrophobic Extract of Neem Oil .... 70%

    INERT INGREDIENTS:

    d-Limonene ................................. 30%

    TOTAL .............................................................. 100%

    APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Apply Neem Oil at first sign of insects/mites. For control
of aphids, spider mites, scale, whiteflies, beetles, leafrollers,
and other insect pests. Neem Oil is most effective when
applied every 7 to 14 days. For heavy insect populations,
spray on a 7 day schedule.
    MIXING INSTRUCTIONS:
Mix Neem Oil at the rate of 2 tablespoons (1 ounce) per
gallon of water. Thoroughly mix solution and spray all plant
surfaces (including undersides of leaves) until completely
wet. Frequently mix solution as you spray.

  8. Wow. I wuznt expectin all that !!! Thanx man :).

    It seems like nice stuff.

The Hydrophobic processing of Neem allows it (an oil)
to easily emulsify with water. So its good for mixing,
and u dont have to shake and spray lol.

Take note tho, that its at a low level so once its mixed
it will be alot lower. The reason for this is so u can use
it alot without risking the plants health.

This stuff is probably perfect for this type of infestation.

And its a good idea to alwayz have it around as part of
    your regular plant maintenance.

U get a wack of my mighty rep stick for that lol.
Actually its more like a broken cigarette haha.

Got the Neem oil from HD today, thinking about using it tomorrow... will definately use the 2 tbs/ gallon combo...
Thats why I dont mind spending a few extra bucks for something that I will have for years and will always be useful down the line...AWESOME
Just wanted to make sure 2tbs sounds safe!

  13. HA.

Gave them a good spraying this morning... is the neem supposed to leave that shiny residue?

I have no clue , can neem oil be found at lowes. in 6' planters and 12/12 from seed i think she said 3 or so weeks in. 2 of them seem strong 1's new growth is yellow and i think the gnats are going at it ?

  18. wasn't crashing the thread. i clearly stated i have the same gnat problem.
I feel like they're stunting plant, and they are eating away at new leafs.

I also asked can neem oil be found at lowes, seeing as you went to homedepot

  19. its str8 man....
but you werent clear AT ALL
dont know about lowes.. look on their site

  20. I didnt mean it in a bad way man. Usually, growers start their
own threads - that way, u are guaranteed more answers that
are tailored to your situation. Its a common GC noob thing.
I say laugh, in the most sincere way. Cool ???

    Yes, Lowes should stock it.
