Gluten allergy

Discussion in 'Cannabis Stash Showcase & Strain Photos' started by Smokering, Apr 7, 2011.

  1. So recently I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease(gluten allergy). After eating gluten I break out into hives along with stomach issues. I am a daily toker and was going to see if anyone knew a good strain to smoke to help with my allergy.
Also, if anyone else has this gluten allergy, please let me know how/if marijuana helps with the allergy or how it effects you. Thanks

  2. have a friend with CD, has his card, too late to give him a ring tho. you can start here and kinda look around based on what you determine your most frustrating/common symptoms of the disease are: Marijuana Strain Effects - Leafly

ill try to hit this thread up in the morning. good luck man!

  3. Celiac disease is an autoimmune illness which can lead to many complications such as ataxia, neuropathy, lymphoma and osteoporosis
    Celiac Disease

There are a ton of celiacs out there on MMJ. Including me. Have you considered taking some cannabis (eatables, oil, canncaps) orally for maximum inflammation reducing benefit to the intestine?

    I like Shiskaberry for nausea.

  4. Unfortunately I live where the medical card is out of the question but It's not ever dry around me. I have noticed after breaking out in hives and then toking it helps calm the hives down. The pain I get in my stomach sometimes is damn near the worst pain I have had thus far in my life and leaves me unable to eat but after a nice smoke my stomach seems to settle and then I am able to munch. Does anyone know how mj helps with CD? I was thinking about asking my dr her thoughts. The shiskaberry is beautiful. I would die to get some of that nug.

  5. My biggest frustration is nausea and the stomach pain. The hives itch like hell but that's the least of my worries.

  6. You may be able to get prescription Marinol or Cesamet (synthetic cannabinoids) for the stomach pain in non MMJ states (if you have insurance, they are expensive). The synthetic drugs may be good for times you can't use weed such as emergencies, travel....

I assume your doc will be doing more testing if your pain continues. Gallstones, biliary sludge and chronic pancreatits are common complications of celiac

    Chronic pancreatitis: MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia

All the folks here who have celiac and are on MMJ seem to get good symptom relief.

  7. I think i have this, not been diagnosed but anything wheat or gluten makes me puuuuke :D

  8. And marinol and cesamet can be prescribed to me even if my state hasn't passed any sort of mj health law? If so I'm very interested in talking to my dr about one of them.

  9. Yup:), they're just synthetic THC, don't work as well as the real thing but can be better than nothing....this should explain:

Marinol vs. Natural Cannabis - NORML

Nabilone is Ceasmet. Its used off label for things like Fibromyalgia. If you have decent insurance these are both legal options in a non MMJ state.

  10. Redhead thanks for the info. I feel so much better out my situation. So you think I would just talk to my allergy dr about the two meds? I mean how do I go about running that past her without her thinking ...oh this 25 year old guy just wants THC.

  11. man that sucks, i've tried a friend's gluten free pasta once... no good

Haha eating around gluten is the hardest diet ever.

  13. I have Celiac Disease. CD is not technically an "allergy", it is an autoimmune disease. When a person with Celiac consumes gluten, the body produces antibodies that destroy the villi of the small intestine, which leads to malabsorption and sometimes other dangerous conditions, such as cancer. There are many other symptoms and complications that can be present, such as Dermatitis Herpetiformis, the rash which you seem to have.

Cannabis can help with some of the uncomfortable symptoms of Celiac, and improve the appetite, but it is not a cure. The good news is that you have an excellent chance of complete recovery, and cessation of symptoms, by following a strict gluten-free diet. Good luck.

Does your dr have you on any type of medication for your CD? Does mj seem to help your symptoms?

  15. No, there is no medication for Celiac Disease, although several companies are working on it. After going Gluten free, six years ago, I noticed a MAJOR difference within several days. I was not well for most of my life, and getting worse, before I changed my diet. I no longer have many symptoms of Celiac Disease, except for some possible neurological issues caused by years of eating gluten - but that's a minor complaint. Marijuana use likely helped me to cope before diagnosis, but the only thing that really works is going gluten-free. These days, there's all kinds of gluten free choices available, such as pasta, beer, cake, bread, and other things. There's also a number of books on the market, including cookbooks and lists of gluten free foods. If you have any specific questions about the diet that are beyond the scope of this site, feel free to PM me.

  16. I am a tad confused as OP is experiencing hives and seeing and allergist, not a gastro:confused:. If OP prehaps has actual wheat allergy instead of celiac?

If that is the case and you're having significant stomach pain then looking into an eosinophilic gastroenteritis might be in order?

You may wish to "feel out" your physician on the subject of medical cannabis. With ongoing allergy (or celiac) issues you're going to need a physician you can have an decent relationship with, and that may take a bit of work (or firing several physicians till you get a sensible one)
