Gibberellic Acid? a growers dream?

Discussion in 'Advanced Growing Techniques' started by SmokingSumo, Feb 1, 2010.

  1. ive heard that gibberellic acid is an extremely powerful growth hormone, the smallest amount able to increase the size of a head of lettuce ten times and up to over ten feet tall, i read this on unitednuclear.com, im asking, to some1 who is more educated than me, could this be applied to a cannabis plant and increase yield by ten fold as long as space wasnt a restriction? this blew my mind lol, some1 help.

  2. A 10 ft head of lettuce?? Haha that would be nuckin futs. I doubt the results are that dramatic but sounds interesting I'll cheak it out

  3. Im no pro but I am in college studying shit like this. Using gibberellic acid on our MJ plants is a seemingly promising practice that I am very interested in. From what I have learned in biology gibberelic acid is basically a vehicle for a group of hormones labeled gibberelins. These hormones are created by the plant when certain environmental cues tell the plant that, amongst other things, it needs to grow. However, now I am uncertain about this, but gibberellins also play a part in determining the sex of the plant. In monoecious plants (1 plant with both sexes on 1 individual) the plant will only grow because it is already male and female. In dioecious plants (seperate sexes on seperate individuals) (MJ for example) the introduction of this hormone will cause females (and males i think) to grow, but also to go hermie. Because of this you will grow larger plants but they will also pollinate themselves:(. I am pretty sure this is true because I have read elsewhere that growers use the acid to hermie part of a female plant to get feminized pollen and therefore feminized seeds.

This is a great thread though, and hopefully we get some experts in here to drop some knowledge:hello:

  4. from what i remember gibberellic acid can be used to make female seeds, this was way back and i dont remember where i read it about 5 years ago, somthing bout spraying it on plant in different sequences either during flowering or just when you swithch 12/12, but like i said i dont remember exactly.....wait, just found this online......

Galoch (197 indicated that gibberellic acid (GA3) promoted stamen production while indoleacetic acid (IAA), ethrel, and kinetin promoted pistil production in prefloral dioecious Cannabis. Sex alteration has several useful applications. Most importantly, if only one parent expressing a desirable trait can be found, it is difficult to perform a cross unless it happens to be a hermaphrodite plant. Hormones might be used to change the sex of a cutting from the desirable plant, and this cutting used to mate with it. This is most easily accomplished by changing a pistillate cutting to a staminate (pollen) parent, using a spray of 100 ppm gibberellic acid in water each day for five consecutive days. Within two weeks staminate flowers may appear. Pollen can then be collected for selfing with the original pistillate parent. Offspring from the cross should also be mostly pistillate since the breeder is selfing for pistillate sexuality. Staminate parents reversed to pistillate floral production make inferior seed-parents since few pistillate flowers and seeds are formed."

  5. Yep it causes the formation of hermaphroditic flowers. Was one of the first chemicals to make feminized seeds they generally use other safer chemicals now.

  6. It depends on it's application though, because it's also used as a root and growth stimulant and is common in many popular nutrient formulas geared toward cannabis cultivation. Generally anyone using Kelp and other sea based products are adding gibberellic acid to their regiment. Liquid Karma is a Kelp based product, SeaPlex, Alg-A-Mic, Kelp Meal, Kelp Extract etc... all have varying amounts of gibberellic acid.

I use 2 kinds of processed kelp in my grows, both root feeding and foliar feeding, and have never had a hermie.

  7. I mean when applied to nodal areas...lol

  8. You have to be careful with doping your plants, could have some weird effects...

  9. very smart, and now i see, has anyone that you guys know of attempted to produce feminized seeds themselves using this or another similar substance? a hermie wouldnt be to great but being able to produce fem. seeds from home would be a considerable asset for being able to preserve strains that you have liked or preferred.

  10. also i was hoping that we could expand this thread into a discussion of many of the hormones that effect a plants cell production and growth, i have been researching some (auxins, gibberellans (sp?), etc.) and i was hoping some of the more educated chemist and botanist could comment on what nutrients contribute to the proper amounts and proper distribution of the hormones throughout the plants lifecycle.

  11. Dont ever use a naturally hermaphroditing female to make fem seeds, herm will be in itas genes and a few herm phenotypes may surface. You can buy stuff specifically made for this purpose (im not sure if its gibberellic acid or some toher substance that makes nodal flowers hermaphrodite) and make some fem seeds at home, remember fem seeds arent good breeding stock and really mothers and clones are easier to manage than any sort of male flowers and acid...as far as i am concerned. Although seeds are handy preserver of genetic stock but with fem you wont have males to breed if you do loose your mothers. Although seeds are convenient and easier to move/hide. If you were to perserve any strain properly (other than clone only strains) you would need to beable to get to both males and females in the seeds. And if you do decide to produce some fem seeds at home remember to induce male flowers with the acid on a healthy female and use the pollen from those male flowers to pollinate a seperate healthy female that was never treated with the acid. It helps create a stronger seed stock and genetic lineage.

  12. Well you could hope for somebody on here to actually be knowledgeable enough to teach chemical botony to you. But I sort of doubt too many people on here are that specifically educated or would take the time to teach all the effects. You should take a college botony/chemical botony course. Or go to your local horticulture museum or greenhouse and discuss it with the people who care for it and see if they offer classes or courses. lol. Or I guess maybe someone on here could educate us all...That would be nice...how about somebody that is knowledged in genetic botony.

  13. I used Gibberellic Acid on one of my first grows, all but one plant hermied. I Applied the Gibberellic acid to the seeds during the germination process by heavily spraying the The papertowel that i used for germination.

  14. Yes ive heard that the growth hormone is also very good at helping germination of the seed, though now id still be scared that it would lead to hermaphroditing in the future.

yes perhaps genetic botany is complicated for an internet forum to discuss, but i feel like proper understanding of these hormones could lead to some1 personally developing there own nutrient formulas that suit there preferences

  15. Helping germination of a seed? What the three days it takes is too unbearable?

  16. 3 days?...i do it in 24-36 hrs :)....90% germ rate or better ;)

  17. Yes depending...but just sayin three days max...is acid neccessary?

  18. 3 days? too long? if 3 days was too long i wouldnt be interested in growing anything. And what i meant was ive heard its good at initiating germination in a seed that ur having problems sprouting. Id always try plain water first, but if u cant get the seed to crack and sprout, and u just spent around 10 dollars per seed and waited 7 days for it to ship all the way from holland then id feel obligated to exhaust my options.

  19. IMO, if you cant get the seed to crack or sprout, its prolly because the seed is no good, there for if you decide to force it open, the genetics in that seed will be less than mediocre, it will grow like a runt, not produce very much and will be less potent, i say this because ive tried forcing seeds that didnt pop(physically), and thats exactly what happend, now i get 90% germ rate and the ones that dont pop i throw away, not worth the time and dissapointment

  20. gibberellic acid and aspirin both cause hermaphrodites in cannabis.should not be used in spray form, will cause stetching and male flowers. you must be very carefull with this stuff! these aren't vedgies were growing. original seed breeders used this stuff to make fem seeds back in the early 00's to 05? or somewhere around there. there was a big write up in a pot based mag about it. most grow books also speek of aspirin in the same way.[been growin since i was 17,i'm 41 now]
